Karen Sue Hilderbrand Burleson
December 13, 1946 — June 10, 2026
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Karen Sue Hilderbrand Burleson, a beloved mother, grandmother, educator, and friend. Karen passed away peacefully on June 10, 2026, at the age of 79. Born on December 13, 1946, in Borger, Texas, she graced the world with her warmth, creativity, and unwavering dedication to those she cherished.
Karen was the cherished daughter of Joe Brice and Marjorie Maxine Hilderbrand, who predeceased her but whose love and values she carried forward throughout her life. She held dear the lessons and love she received from her parents, and in turn, she passed these gifts on to her own family.
A proud graduate of Alvin High School in 1964, Karen went on to earn her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Houston. Her passion for art and education led her to a fulfilling career as an art teacher at Victoria High School, where she inspired countless students with her boundless creativity and enthusiasm. For over three decades, from her first day in the classroom until her retirement in 2001, Karen nurtured young minds, encouraging them to see the beauty in the world around them and within themselves.
Karen's greatest joy was her family. She is lovingly remembered by her son, Shawn Burleson, and her treasured grandchildren, Abby, Morgan, and Cooper O'Neill. Her family was the center of her universe, and she was their guiding star, illuminating their lives with her love, wisdom, and gentle spirit. Karen's home was always filled with laughter, art supplies scattered about, and the welcoming aroma of her favorite recipes—a true testament to her nurturing and generous heart.
Her legacy is one of kindness, creativity, and a steadfast commitment to enriching the lives of others. Karen's influence extended beyond her immediate family and students, touching the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her friends and colleagues recall her as a compassionate soul, always ready with a listening ear and a word of encouragement.
As we gather to honor Karen's life, we celebrate the indelible mark she left on the world. Her spirit lives on in the art she created, the lessons she imparted, and the love she shared so freely. In our hearts, she remains a vibrant presence, a reminder of the beauty of a life well-lived.
A service to commemorate Karen's life will be held at a later date, where family and friends will come together to share memories and celebrate the legacy she leaves behind. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Karen's memory to a charity supporting arts education, a cause dear to her heart.
Karen Sue Hilderbrand Burleson will be dearly missed, but her spirit will continue to inspire and uplift all who were fortunate enough to be touched by her grace.
