Born on September 17, 1965, in Newark, New Jersey, Karen was the cherished daughter of Fannie Barnett and James Ruff. Her life was a testament to love, resilience, and humor, traits she carried with her until her peaceful departure.
Karen grew up in a family filled with love, alongside her siblings Darryl Powell, Stevie Barnett , Joanne Powell , Harry Powell as well as dozen of nieces & nephews also deceased siblings— twin sister Katherine Powell, Frances Kelly, Julie Powell, Larry Powell, and James Powell. She was deeply loved by her parents, who have also passed, and now joins them in eternal rest. A
For 30 years, Karen dedicated her professional life to St. Barnabas Hospital in Livingston, New Jersey, where she worked in radiology. Her colleagues admired her dedication and the warmth she brought to her work environment. Karen was known for her ability to lighten any mood and was always ready with a smile or a joke to lift the spirits of those around her.
Outside of work, Karen found joy in the simple pleasures of life. She delighted in watching her favorite TV shows, a hobby that brought her much comfort and relaxation. Her love for entertainment was matched only by her love for making others laugh, a gift she shared freely and often.
Aunt Karen, as she was affectionately known, was renowned for her goofy nature and her incredible ability to bring smiles to everyone's faces. Her joyous spirit was infectious, and she had an unparalleled knack for turning even the most mundane moments into cherished memories.
Karen leaves behind a loving circle of family and friends who were touched by her kindness and humor. Though she did not have a spouse, her family was expansive, consisting of those she loved and who loved her in return. She will be dearly missed, but her legacy of laughter and love will continue to live on in the hearts of those she leaves behind.
A service to celebrate Karen's life will be held on September 17, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Cotton Funeral Home, located at 1025 Bergen St, Newark, NJ 07112. Family and friends are invited to join in remembrance of a remarkable woman who touched so many lives.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to everyone who supported Karen, especially her dedicated caregivers, during her final days. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in her honor.
