With a heart full of love and a life filled with dedication and kindness, Karen Joe Killham passed away peacefully in her sleep on April 20, 2026, at the age of 74, while under hospice care. Born on January 23, 1952, in North Platte, Nebraska, Karen was the beloved daughter of Ben and Clara Lee, who have predeceased her along with her cherished sister, Sandee Berggren.
Karen's journey through life was marked by an unwavering commitment to education, a passion for fostering compassion, and a deeply rooted love for her family. She graduated from North Platte High School in 1970 and went on to further her education at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, earning her degree in 1975. Her academic pursuits laid the foundation for a remarkable career dedicated to nurturing minds and supporting students.
Throughout her professional life, Karen was a beacon of knowledge and encouragement. From 1990 to 1998, she worked at Lincoln Northeast High School as a computer lab supervisor, where she also served as the cheerleader sponsor, instilling a sense of spirit and unity among her students. In 1998, she furthered her calling at Southeast Community College-Lincoln, where she taught courses and managed the computer lab until her retirement in 2024. Karen’s dedication to education and her students left an indelible mark on countless lives.
In addition to her professional achievements, Karen found joy and purpose in her love for animals, particularly dogs. She was actively involved with SNAFU and Wag N Train Terrier Rescue, where she dedicated herself to fostering dogs and finding them loving homes. Her home was always a sanctuary for one or more furry companions, reflecting her nurturing spirit and her boundless compassion.
Karen is survived by her three loving sons, Owen (Emily) Killham, Evan Killham, and Adam Killham, who were her pride and joy. Her legacy lives on through her three grandchildren, who she adored and cherished. She is also survived by her brother, Bruce Lee, who shared in her life's journey.
In accordance with Karen's wishes, a private funeral ceremony will be held to honor her life and the profound impact she had on those who were fortunate to know her. The family has requested that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Karen's memory to the memorial fund at 4822 Cleveland Avenue, Lincoln, NE 68504. This fund will continue her work of compassion and support for the causes she held dear.
As we say goodbye to Karen, we celebrate a life well-lived, marked by warmth, generosity, and an indomitable spirit. Her legacy of kindness and dedication will forever be remembered by those whose lives she touched.
