Karen Emily Schrock

Karen Emily Schrock, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully at the age of 74 at Ruby Memorial Hospital, surrounded by her loving family after a short battle with illness. Born on March 20, 1952, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Karen was the cherished daughter of Jacob and Ruth (Hoyman) Hummel, who predeceased her. Karen was a pillar of strength and kindness, known for her unwavering dedication to her family and community. She married her best friend and the love of her life, Donald Schrock, on June 10, 1972. Together, they shared 49 beautiful years of marriage, raising two devoted sons, Chris and Michael, and playing an integral role in the upbringing of their five adored grandchildren. A graduate of the Meyersdale Area School District in 1970, Karen pursued her passion for early childhood education at Mt. Aloysius College. Her career as a Head Start teacher in Meyersdale and Somerset spanned over 40 years, leaving a lasting impact on countless young lives. Her dedication to education was mirrored by her enthusiasm for sports, as she coached Jr. High volleyball at MAHS, where she inspired many young athletes. Karen was an active member of the Amity United Church of Christ, serving in numerous roles that highlighted her commitment to her faith and community. She was also a dedicated member of the Maple Tree Association. Her love of volleyball extended beyond coaching as she participated in various local leagues, showcasing her competitive spirit and passion for the game. In her personal life, Karen found joy in the simple pleasures of home and family. Alongside her husband Donald, she spent much of her life building, improving, and remodeling their cherished home. After Donald’s passing, Karen continued to find solace and companionship in her daily gatherings with friends at the Cumberland YMCA. Her greatest pride and joy were her grandchildren—Chris Jr., Trent, Emily, Samantha, and Bradin—and great-grandchildren, Ava, Mia, and Elijah. Karen dedicated the last 32 years of her life to showering them with love, support, and guidance. Karen is survived by her sons Chris (Sharon) and Michael (Elizabeth); her grandchildren and great-grandchildren; her sisters, Elizabeth, Brenda, Rise, Tracy, and Shannon; her brothers, Scott, Bryan, Loren, Mark, Jody, and Shawn. She is predeceased by her husband Donald, her parents Jacob and Ruth, and her brothers Jon, Ronald, Donald, Terrance, Edward, and Eugene. In honoring Karen's wishes, a private funeral ceremony will be held. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to all of Karen’s friends, family, and the community for their unwavering support during her illness. A memorial service will be held at a time convenient for the family to celebrate Karen’s extraordinary life. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Meyersdale Public Library, a place close to Karen’s heart and reflective of her lifelong dedication to education and community service.
