JW McCray Bowden, Jr.

October 4, 1935 — June 11, 2026

In loving memory, we celebrate the life of JW McCray Bowden, Jr., who passed away peacefully at home on June 11, 2026, at the age of 90. Born on October 4, 1935, in the charming town of Greensburg, LA, JW's life was a tapestry woven with love, service, and dedication. JW was the beloved son of the late JW McCray Bowden, Sr. and Natalie Lindsey Bowden. He was predeceased by his treasured wife, Barbara Martin Bowden, to whom he was devotedly married on July 1, 1961, at Fairfields Baptist Church in Baton Rouge, LA. Together, they built a life rooted in faith and family. A proud and honorable veteran, JW served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1955 to 1959, spending most of his service aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS Philippine Sea. His sense of duty extended beyond military service into a diverse career that included roles at Middleton’s Drug Store, a paper route, and as the head usher at Heart Theater. He found his calling at Ethyl Corporation, where he retired after 20 years as a TEL Operator, only to continue contributing his talents at Ensco, Pinkerton, and Wackenhut. JW's life was a testament to resilience and passion. An avid outdoorsman, he found solace in hunting, fishing, and the tranquility of nature. He was a man of many talents, blessed with an artistic soul that found expression in painting and drawing. His love for old westerns was matched only by his love for adventure and travel, often shared with family who were his heart's delight. He was a devoted member of Comite Baptist Church in Baton Rouge, LA, where his faith was a guiding light in his life. JW's legacy lives on through his cherished children: daughters Dianna B. Jones (Keith) and Darla B. Hilburn (Russell), and son Steven M. Bowden Sr. (Denise). He is also survived by his loving sister, Linda Hanna (George). A proud grandfather, JW's spirit continues through his seven grandchildren: Jesse Jones, Benjamin Jones (Kelcey), Ethan Hilburn (Kaitlyn), Cora Hilburn, Daniel Hilburn, Steven McCray Bowden Jr., and Alyssia Bowden, and three great-grandchildren: Ezra Ellerman, Della Jones, and Ryley Jones. The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Connie Pourciau, Nurse Cheryl, Nurse Mark, and Nurse Assistant Shannon for their compassionate care of JW. A celebration of JW’s life will be held on June 16, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Greenoaks Funeral Home, 9595 Florida Blvd., Baton Rouge, LA 70815. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his honor to the Louisiana Baptist Children's Home, a cause close to his heart. As we remember JW, let us hold dear the memories of his laughter, his unwavering love, and the indelible mark he left on all who were fortunate to know him. May his soul find peace and his legacy continue to inspire.
