With heavy hearts and profound respect, we announce the passing of a cherished mother, grandmother, sister-in-law, and friend, Julia Harris, who departed from this world on July 8, 2026, just a day shy of her 81st birthday. Julia passed away due to complications from renal failure, leaving behind a legacy of love and kindness that will continue to inspire all who knew her. Born on July 9, 1945, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Julia was the beloved daughter of the late James R. and Annie T. White. She was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Major L. Harris, her parents, and her sister, Bessie W. Baker. Julia and Major shared 50 wonderful years together, having married on December 21, 1968. Their union was blessed with a daughter, Toya Harris, who survives her mother with cherished memories. Julia's journey in education began at Capital Senior High School, where she graduated in 1963. Her passion for learning led her to Southern University, where she earned a Bachelor's degree in Education in 1967. Never one to rest on her laurels, Julia furthered her education by completing a Master's +30. Her dedication to education extended into a 36-year career as an educator in St. Tammany and East Baton Rouge Parish, where she touched the lives of thousands of students with her gentle nature and professional demeanor. Julia was a proud and active member of the Baton Rouge Delta Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated for over 50 years. Her faith was a guiding force in her life, and she was a devoted member of Nazarene Baptist Church, contributing her voice as Vice President of the Mass Choir and serving with dedication in the Home Mission. Those who knew Julia will remember her not only for her contributions to education and her community but also for her love of English literature, plays, musicals, and fine dining. Her quick wit and loving spirit endeared her to all, and her gentle nature was a balm to those around her. Julia leaves behind her daughter Toya Harris, her cherished granddaughter Talia Washington, sisters-in-law Linda Lathen and Peggy Wicker, brother-in-law Thomas Harris III, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will continue to celebrate her life and legacy. A service celebrating Julia's life will be held on July 24, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Nazarene Baptist Church, located at 1707 Spanish Town Road, Baton Rouge, LA 70802. The family kindly requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to a charity of your choice in honor of Julia's generous spirit and commitment to making the world a better place. Julia Harris will be remembered for her unwavering love, her dedication to education, and her enduring legacy of kindness and grace.
