It is with heavy hearts and cherished memories that we announce the passing of Joyce Watlington, affectionately known to many as "Ms. Diva," who departed this world on March 13, 2026, at the age of 71. Born on November 12, 1954, in Winston Salem, NC, Joyce was a beacon of kindness, intelligence, and love, whose vibrant spirit touched everyone fortunate enough to know her. Joyce was the beloved daughter of May Sue Watlington Spinks and Henry Spinks, who preceded her in death. She was also predeceased by her son, DeMario Watlington; three brothers, Jimmy D. Watlington, Micheal Wayne Spinks, and Melvin Curtis Spinks; and five sisters, Mary Sowell, Eloise Wright, Fannie Bigelow, Frances Watlington, and Betty Glenda Watlington. Their memories remain etched in our hearts as a testament to the bonds of family and love. Joyce's legacy is carried forward by her children: three devoted daughters, Demetrius Watlington, Dante' Watlington, and De'Coya Watlington, all residing in Winston Salem, NC; and three loving sons, Darrius Pauling, Sr. and DeMarcus Watlington, both of Charlotte, NC, and DeRaie Watlington. Her pride and joy extended to her nine grandchildren: Lillie Watlington, Kevin Taylor, Darcel Whitaker, Johntae Watlington, Karter Watlington, DeMarcus Watlington, Jr., Darrius Pauling, Jr., Ramani Pauling, and Anyla Pauling; and one great-grandson, Noah Watlington. Her family was her world, and she cherished every moment spent with them. Joyce was a graduate of the Parkland High School Class of 1973 and pursued further studies in Data Entry Processing at Forsyth Technical Community College. Her dedication to learning and growth was evident in all she did. A devoted member of the New Gospel Tabernacle Holiness Church in Winston Salem, Joyce loved the Lord and participated actively in Sunday School and various church activities. Her faith was the cornerstone of her life, providing strength and comfort to those around her. Her church family will deeply miss her presence and service. Known as "Ms. Diva" for her love of life and zest for enjoyment, Joyce found joy in cooking, singing, and dancing. She was the life of the party, spreading warmth and laughter wherever she went. Her kindness and down-to-earth nature made her a beloved friend and confidante to many. Always willing to help, Joyce's compassion knew no bounds. Joyce is survived by a large and loving family, including seven sisters: Grace Richardson of Kernersville, NC; Carolyn Bigelow of Mebane, NC; Peggy Atwater, Virginia (Junior) Miles, Joann Watlington Brown, and Jewel Stanfield, all of Burlington, NC; and Willie Sue Watlington of Eden, NC. She leaves behind five brothers: Charles (Shirley) Spinks of Stoney Creek, NC; Rueben Watlington, Sherman Watlington, Larry Watlington, and Aaron Watlington, all of Winston-Salem, NC. Joyce also shared a special bond with her devoted friend, Charles Green of Winston-Salem, NC. Her extended family includes a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will continue to celebrate and remember her generous spirit. A celebration of Joyce's life will be held on March 20, 2026, at 3:00 PM at the Russell Funeral Home located at 822 Carl Russell Ave, Winston Salem, NC 27101. Family and friends are invited to gather in love and remembrance of a life well-lived. The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to each person who has celebrated and contributed to Ms. Diva's life. In Joyce's own words, "The party has just begun." Let us continue to honor her memory by embracing life with the same enthusiasm and warmth she shared with us all. Rest in peace, dear Joyce. You will forever be in our hearts.
