January 5, 1948 — April 6, 2026

With heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well-lived, we announce the passing of Joyce J. Kelley, who departed this world peacefully on April 19, 2026, at the age of 78. Born on January 19, 1948, in Des Moines, Iowa, Joyce was a beacon of love, laughter, and unwavering kindness. Joyce was the beloved daughter of Dorothy E. Claytor and Mr. Carter. She was preceded in death by her cherished mother, Dorothy; her dear siblings Fletcher Claytor, Henry Claytor, Sr., Morris "Ali Hassan Muhammad" Claytor, Freddie Lee Claytor, Sr., Marie B. Claytor Rudison, Helen Claytor-Richards, and Elizabeth Claytor-Crawford. Each of these family members held a special place in her heart, and she now joins them in eternal rest. Joyce's journey began in Des Moines, where she spent her early years attending public schools, forming friendships and memories that would last a lifetime. Her path led her to Houston, Texas, where she furthered her education at Miller Jr. High and graduated from Jack Yates Sr. High. It was in Des Moines that she met the love of her life, Quig Kelley, and together they built a life filled with joy and devotion. Joyce was a dedicated and respected professional, spending her career with Northwestern Bell, Southwestern Bell/AT&T, and the Houston Independent School District. Her work was marked by diligence and a commitment to excellence, reflecting her deep sense of responsibility and integrity. Beyond her professional life, Joyce found joy in the simple pleasures. She had a talent for preparing beautiful party trays, a hobby she loved sharing with friends and family. Shopping was another of her passions, especially when it involved gifting to anyone fortunate to be in her sight. Her generosity knew no bounds. Joyce also enjoyed the quietude of playing solitaire, a pastime that provided moments of reflection and peace. Joyce was a woman of remarkable character. Her caring and loving heart was evident in every interaction, and her home was a sanctuary of warmth and hospitality. She was known for her beauty, both inside and out, and her penchant for funny jokes brought laughter to all who knew her. Above all, Joyce was a devoted mother, ensuring her only child, Que Da’Bre’jzh Kelley, was well taken care of and had everything he needed. Her dedication to her family was unparalleled, and her bond with her sister Helen was one of deep affection and companionship. Joyce leaves behind a legacy of love and kindness. She is survived by her son, Que Da’Bre’jzh Kelley, who carries forward her spirit and values. She was the proud grandmother of three grandchildren, who will forever cherish the memories of their beloved grandmother. Though she did not have great-grandchildren, her influence and love will undoubtedly be passed down through generations. A service to honor and celebrate the life of Joyce J. Kelley will be held on April 23, 2026, at 11:00 AM. As we gather to bid farewell, we remember a life filled with love, laughter, and an indomitable spirit that touched the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests acts of kindness in her memory, reflecting the generosity that defined Joyce's life. Joyce will be deeply missed but never forgotten, as her legacy of love, laughter, and warmth will continue to inspire those who knew and loved her.
