It is with profound sadness and cherished memories that we announce the passing of Joyce Ann Splittgerber Counter on March 8, 2026. Joyce, a beloved wife, devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and cherished friend, passed away peacefully at Athens Limestone Hospital, surrounded by the love of her family at the age of 91.
Born on June 26, 1934, in Mitchell, Nebraska, Joyce was the loving daughter of Eldor and Esther Splittgerber, who predeceased her. From her earliest days, Joyce exhibited a zest for life and learning, graduating as Valedictorian from Albion High School in 1952. She furthered her education at the University of Nebraska, earning a degree in Vocational Education in 1954, a testament to her lifelong dedication to teaching and empowering others.
On June 2, 1957, Joyce married the love of her life, Duane Counter, in York, Nebraska. Together, they shared 68 wonderful years of marriage, filled with love, laughter, and mutual respect. Their union was blessed with four children: Douglas, Mickey (Cherie), Sharon (Thomas), and Julie (Troy), who will forever carry forward her legacy of kindness, compassion, and resilience. Joyce was also a proud grandmother to 13 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren, each of whom brought immense joy to her life.
Joyce dedicated her career to education, initially as a teacher in Limestone County, where she inspired countless young minds. She later served as the Director of Athens/Limestone Clean Community, where her leadership and commitment to environmental stewardship left an indelible mark on the community she loved so dearly.
An active member of the First Presbyterian Church on the Square for over 67 years, Joyce served as an Elder, Sunday School Superintendent, and choir member, always ready to lend her voice and heart to the service of others. Her faith was a cornerstone of her life, guiding her actions and fostering her generous spirit. Joyce's volunteer work extended to numerous organizations, including the United Way, Civitan, and DHR, where her contributions were both significant and deeply appreciated.
In her personal life, Joyce found joy and tranquility in the simple pleasures of growing plants and creating beautiful flower arrangements, reflecting her love for nature and beauty. She was an avid reader and crossword enthusiast, pursuits that kept her mind sharp and active throughout her years. She cherished her time playing Bridge and engaging in intellectual pursuits with her Quest Club.
Joyce is survived by her beloved husband, Duane; her children, Douglas, Mickey (Cherie), Sharon (Thomas), and Julie (Troy); her brother, Allan (Pat) Splittgerber; and sister-in-law, Diane Gross. Her legacy continues through her cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who will carry her memory forward with love and admiration.
Joyce's life was a beacon of service, love, and dedication. Her warmth and kindness touched everyone she met, leaving the world a better place than she found it. She will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who knew her.
A memorial service to celebrate Joyce's remarkable life will be held at First Presbyterian Church on the Square, where friends and family are invited to gather in remembrance and gratitude for her enduring legacy. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the United Way or a charity of one's choice in Joyce's honor, ensuring that her spirit of giving continues to inspire and uplift others.
May Joyce Ann Splittgerber Counter rest in eternal peace, forever in our hearts.
