Joshua Lael Hockaday

Some people leave behind accomplishments. Others leave behind possessions. Joshua Lael Hockaday left behind something far greater—love, laughter, and countless memories that will forever live in the hearts of those who knew him. On July 18, 2026, at the age of 39, Josh completed his earthly journey, but the joy he shared with others will continue to shine through every life he touched. Born on September 14, 1986, in Columbus, Georgia, Josh possessed a gift that cannot be taught—the ability to make people smile. Whether through his infectious laughter, quick wit, or genuine kindness, he had a remarkable way of making others feel seen, welcomed, and loved. To know Josh was to experience joy, and his presence made every gathering just a little brighter. Josh was the cherished son of Virgil Hockaday Sr. (Willete) and Zetta Hockaday. He was a devoted father to his beloved son, Jayden Hockaday, who was the greatest joy of his life and the legacy he treasured most. He leaves to cherish his memory his siblings: Virgil Hockaday Jr.; Teren Hutchinson (Shekela); Angelo Hockaday; Anissa Hockaday (Marcus); and William Pepper-Alston. He was also a proud and loving uncle to many nieces and nephews and shared a special bond with each of them. He is also lovingly remembered by his extended family, countless cousins, and dear friends, especially his lifelong childhood best friend, Terrell Pinckney. Josh spent his formative years in Fayetteville, North Carolina, where he graduated from Jack Britt High School in 2005. He proudly answered the call to serve his country as a member of the United States Army, serving honorably as a Pharmacy Specialist. His service reflected his willingness to care for others and be part of something greater than himself. Following his military service, he built a career as both a security officer and forklift operator before making his home in Charlotte, North Carolina. Anyone who knew Josh knew there was never a dull moment when he was around. A lifelong fan of Michael Jackson, Josh could effortlessly imitate the King of Pop's signature dance moves and mannerisms, turning ordinary family gatherings into unforgettable performances. His sense of humor was contagious, his smile was genuine, and his personality was larger than life. He had an extraordinary ability to lift the spirits of everyone around him, often becoming the heart of every room he entered. More than anything, Josh loved his family. He showed up. He checked in. He laughed loudly. He loved deeply, and he made sure the people he cared about knew exactly how much they meant to him. Whether he was spending time with Jayden, teasing his siblings, entertaining his nieces and nephews, or simply sharing a laugh with friends, Josh lived in the moment and made every moment count. Kyimon, Zalia, Zamaria, Alana, Briel, Jyla, and Raelynn—will forever remember the way he proudly introduced himself as "Uncle Josh" and made sure they never forgot it. His generosity, compassion, and unwavering love for others created a legacy that cannot be measured by years alone, but by the countless lives he touched. Although our hearts are broken, we find comfort in God's promise that "to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord" (2 Corinthians 5:8). While we grieve the loss of Josh's physical presence, we rejoice in the hope of eternal life and trust that he now rests in the loving embrace of his Savior. Joshua's laughter may no longer echo through our homes, but it will forever resonate in our hearts. His love lives on through his son, his family, his friends, and in every life he touched with his warmth, humor, and generous spirit. Until we meet again, Josh... Take your rest. Your work here is complete. Your race has been run. Your crown has been won.
