In Loving Memory

Joshua Devin Rose
May 30, 1970 — October 31, 2026
Joshua Devin Rose, a beacon of warmth and laughter, passed away peacefully at home on October 31, 2026, after courageously facing medical challenges for several months. Born on May 30, 1970, in Richmond, Virginia, Josh's life was a testament to love, friendship, and the joy of connection.
Josh was the beloved son of Cherie Marsh and Bill Rose, step-son to the late Alan Marsh, , , cherished brother to Rachael and Shayna Rose, and father to Tristan and Kipling, his pride and joy and the lights of his life. From an early age, Josh exhibited an extraordinary ability to connect with others, a gift that would define his life and relationships. No one remained a stranger for long in Josh's presence; his infectious laughter and playful spirit welcomed all into his world.
Educated at Jamesville-DeWitt High School in Syracuse, New York, Josh later pursued his passion for learning at Stephen F. Austin State University in Texas, where he earned his bachelor's degree. His career path was as varied as his interests, teaching in Virginia and Minnesota, working in customer service, and most recently, managing a travel agency alongside his beloved wife, Lynette Matter-Rose. In every role, Josh's genuine interest in others and his commitment to service shone brightly.
Josh's personal life was rich with love and adventure. He shared a deep bond with his first wife, Lea Ann Rankin, with whom he had two wonderful sons, Tristan and Kipling. Later, he found love again with Lynette Matter, and together they built a life filled with travel, laughter, and mutual support. Josh embraced Lynette's family as his own, cherishing his relationships with his mother and father-in-law, the late Lois and Richard Matter, and welcoming honorary children, Casper and Darien Hilmerson, into his heart.
A true Renaissance man, Josh's interests ranged from avidly reading a variety of subjects to crafting poetry, a passion that began in his youth. He was a dedicated sports fan, particularly of the Minnesota Vikings, and relished in sharing this enthusiasm with his family and friends. He also loved animals, especially his many cats and dogs. Yet, it was in the simple moments—telling stories, making others laugh, and spending time with his loved ones—that Josh found his greatest joy.
Josh was predeceased by his grandparents, Joyce and Larry O'Neil and Gladys and Eddie Rose, his step-father Alan Marsh, his mother-in-law Lois Matter, father-in-law Richard Matter, and his uncle Rodney O'Neil. He leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter, survived by his devoted wife Lynette, his beloved sons Tristan and Kipling, his loving mother Cherie Marsh, father Bill Rose ( and Linda, Bill's partner), his sisters Rachael and Shayna Rose, his brothers-in-law Lance and Lincoln Matter, his cherished niece and nephew, Casper and Darien, and countless uncles, aunts, cousins, and friends and family members whose lives he touched.
A celebration of Josh's life will be held on November 28, 2026, at Helms Funeral Home, located at 306 E Water St, Decorah, IA 52101.
Josh's legacy is one of love, laughter, and boundless generosity. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
