Josephine V. Szwarc
November 8, 2025 — May 16, 2026
In the tender embrace of her family and the enduring warmth of treasured memories, Josephine V. Szwarc passed away peacefully on May 16, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and unforgettable moments. Born on November 8, 2025, in the charming town of Verona, PA, Josephine was a beacon of light and joy to all who knew her.
Josephine was the beloved daughter of Caroline and Joseph Samec. After her father's passing, her mother remarried Anton Stanich, who became a cherished part of her life. Predeceased by her parents, her brother William Samec, and her devoted husband, Leonard A. Szwarc, she is now joyfully reunited with them in eternity.
A proud graduate of Verona High School in 1942, Josephine embarked on a journey that would see her become a cornerstone of her community. For over 30 years, she was the proprietor of the beloved neighborhood establishment, Stanich's Cafe, in West Deer Township. Her tavern was more than just a place to enjoy good company; it was a sanctuary of counsel and camaraderie. Josephine's innate ability to listen and nurture earned her the affectionate title of "neighborhood psychologist," as she mentored and counseled patrons of all ages with wisdom and warmth.
Josephine's passion for life was evident in her many interests. A dedicated member of the River Forest Golf Club for over sixty years, she served as President of the Women’s Golf Association, inspiring many with her leadership and spirit. Even into her mid-nineties, Josephine was an avid golfer, and her triumph at the Wildwood Country Club tournament, where she shot a hole-in-one and won a car, remains legendary.
A fervent supporter of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Josephine's dedication to her team was unmatched. As a season ticket holder for nearly 80 years, she earned the endearing title of the "Matriarch of Steeler Nation," attending games with her husband Leonard since 1946. Her presence at the stadium was as much a part of the game-day experience as the team itself, and her absence will be profoundly felt.
Josephine's love for music was as diverse as it was deep, with a collection spanning classical, big band, and rock 'n roll. Her favorite artists, Louis Prima and Nat King Cole, often provided the soundtrack for evenings filled with jitterbug and polka dancing alongside her beloved Leonard. Never one to shy away from a good time, Josephine enjoyed her cocktails, particularly a well-crafted Manhattan or a glass of merlot, raising a toast to life’s many blessings.
Her competitive spirit and fierce loyalty to her family were hallmarks of her character. Known for her radiant smile and welcoming embrace, Josephine was a confidante and encourager, urging everyone she met to pursue their dreams with the same determination she embodied.
In accordance with her wishes, a private funeral ceremony will be held to honor her remarkable life. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her memory to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, an organization close to her heart, at www.stjude.org.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate staff of Bridges Hospice and Concordia of Bridgeville for their unwavering support and care during Josephine's final days.
As we say goodbye to Josephine, we hold onto the indelible impact she had on our lives, her legacy a testament to a life well-lived and a heart forever open.
