March 3, 1934 — October 14, 2026

Josephine Murphy Cartier, a cherished mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on October 14, 2026, after a sudden brief illness. Born on March 3, 1934, in Somerville, Massachusetts, Josephine was the beloved daughter of the late Joseph and Mary Murphy. Josephine's life was a testament to her unwavering commitment to family and community. She married the love of her life, Leo Norman Cartier, on October 16, 1954, and together they built a home filled with warmth and laughter. The couple was blessed with five children, Cynthia Cartier, John Cartier, Noralee Cartier, Stephen Cartier and Brian Cartier, who brought immense joy and pride into their lives. A devoted grandmother to seven grandchildren—Kathy, John, Gregory, Elizabeth, Maureen, Carolyn and Joanna—Josephine cherished every moment spent with them. Her love extended further to her twelve great-grandchildren, whose lives she touched with her gentle spirit and wisdom. Josephine was predeceased by her loving husband Leo, her sons Stephen and Brian, her parents Joseph and Mary, and her dear brothers, Francis, William, Johnny, Joseph, and Daniel. Her legacy of kindness and strength continues to inspire those who knew and loved her. A woman of deep faith, Josephine found solace and strength in her spiritual beliefs. She will be remembered for her generosity, her unwavering faith, and her ability to bring people together with her warm, welcoming presence. Friends and family are invited to celebrate Josephine's life on October 31, 2026, at 10:00 AM at St. Joseph's Cathedral, located on Allen St., Burlington, VT. As we gather to honor her memory, we remember her not only for the life she lived but for the love she gave so freely. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Josephine's memory to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or The Chittenden County Humane Society, causes she held close to her heart. Josephine's legacy lives on in the hearts of her family and friends, and her memory will be cherished for generations to come. May she rest in peace, reunited with her loved ones who have gone before her.
