In loving memory, we honor the life of Joseph Pendergrass, a cherished father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, who passed away peacefully on May 17, 2026, after a courageous battle with illness. Born on February 5, 1937, in Macon, Georgia, Joseph's life was a testament to dedication, service, and unwavering love.
Joseph was the beloved son of Joseph and Mary Pendergrass, who instilled in him strong values and a deep faith that guided him throughout his life. His early years were spent in the Bronx, where he graduated from Stevenson High School before embarking on a noble journey of service with the United States Marine Corps. From 1954 to 1979, Joseph served his country with honor and distinction, embodying the principles of discipline and duty that would shape his character in all endeavors.
Following his military service, Joseph transitioned to a career as a correction officer. His sense of responsibility and integrity made him a respected figure among his peers and a compassionate guide for those in his care. He approached each day with a God-loving heart, a caring spirit, and a militant resolve to do what was right.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Joseph was a devoted family man. He is survived by his loving son, Ronnie Lewis, who was his pride and joy. Joseph's legacy continues through his grandchildren, Monique, Charisse, Reginald, and Ronnie Lewis, who each carry forward his values of love, respect, and resilience. His five great-grandchildren, whose laughter and joy brought light to his later years, will cherish the stories and lessons imparted by their great-grandfather.
Joseph's life was enriched by his extended family, including a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives who experienced his kindness and generosity firsthand. His home was a place of warmth and welcome, where family gatherings were filled with love, laughter, and lasting memories.
Friends and family are invited to celebrate Joseph's life at a service to be held on June 10, 2026, at 9:39 AM at the Canaan Baptist Church, located at 132 W 116 St. This gathering will be an opportunity to reflect on the profound impact Joseph had on all who were privileged to know him and to give thanks for the remarkable life he lived.
Joseph Pendergrass leaves behind a legacy of faith, courage, and love. His life was a shining example of selflessness and strength, and he will be deeply missed by all whose lives he touched. May he rest in eternal peace, embraced by the love of his Creator and the family who came before him.
