In Loving Memory

Joseph McDonald Matson
August 7, 1956 — September 15, 2026
It is with heavy hearts and loving memories that we announce the unexpected passing of Joseph McDonald Matson on September 15, 2026. Born on August 7, 1956, in Kirkland, Washington, Joe was a beacon of creativity, resilience, and kindness to all who knew him.
Joe grew up in a family rooted in love and tradition, the cherished son of Jean and Marietta Matson. He was predeceased by his beloved parents and his brother, Christopher Matson. His legacy of warmth and generosity continues through his surviving family: his brother Robert Matson, sisters Nancy Carlson and Kathryn Nelson, his daughter Jessica Matson, son Joel Matson, and his three adored stepchildren. Joe was also a proud grandfather to two grandchildren, who brought immense joy to his life.
A graduate of Haines High School in Alaska, Joe's journey through life was marked by his passion for music and his remarkable entrepreneurial spirit. He began his music career playing in venues across Haines and Juneau, delighting audiences with his talent as a self-taught musician. Joe's mastery of the guitar, along with his skills on the piano, banjo, and trumpet, were a testament to his dedication and love for music. His ability as a luthier, crafting guitars from any imaginable material, was nothing short of extraordinary. He also poured his heart into writing original music and lyrics, leaving a lasting legacy through his art.
Joe's career path eventually led him to the world of excavation and heavy equipment operations in Alaska, where he honed his skills before starting his own successful business in Washington. His hard work and determination were evident in every project he undertook, earning him respect and admiration in his field.
In later years, Joe found spiritual solace and community as he began studying the Bible with Jehovah's Witnesses, leading to his baptism in April 2025. Despite being disabled and housebound, he found great joy in attending meetings regularly via Zoom, where he remained an active and cherished member of the congregation.
Joe's life will be celebrated on November 7, 2026, at 3:00 PM at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses. Family and friends are invited to gather in remembrance of a man who lived life with creativity, faith, and an unyielding love for those around him.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Joe's memory to a charity of your choice. May we all continue to be inspired by Joe’s unwavering spirit and the beautiful music he left behind.
