Joseph J Wernette
October 9, 1968 — October 18, 2026
Joseph J. Wernette, a beloved husband, father, son, and brother, passed away peacefully at The Leila and Cyrus Poppen Hospice Residence on October 18, 2026, after a valiant battle with Oligodendroglioma. Born on October 9, 1968, in Lakeview, Michigan, Joseph was a man of great integrity and strength who left an indelible mark on all who knew him.
Joseph was the cherished son of Suzanne Hossler and Paul Wernette. He was raised in a loving family alongside his siblings, Kimberly (Jerry) VanNuil, Suzanne Block, and Michelle (Darren) Lee. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Thomas and Josephine Hossler, Margaret Wernette, and his brother-in-law, Michael Ypma.
In 2003, Joseph married his soulmate, Emma Baldwin, and together they nurtured a loving home for their son, Jon Wernette. Their marriage of 23 years was marked by unwavering devotion and shared joys. Joseph's love for his family was profound, and his pride in his son was evident to all who knew him.
A proud graduate of Lakeview High School, Joseph embarked on a journey of service and dedication by joining the United States Navy in June 1989. As a Gunner's Mate aboard the USS Guam LPH-9, he served with honor during the Gulf War from 1989 to 1992. His love for his country was as steadfast as his love for his family.
Joseph's career as a truck driver allowed him to explore the open roads, a job he cherished until his cancer diagnosis in 2008. Despite the challenges he faced, Joseph remained a pillar of strength, known for his caring heart, quick wit, and willingness to lend a helping hand.
A man of varied interests, Joseph found joy in playing Magic: The Gathering with his son and friends. He was a passionate fan of the Detroit Lions, Red Wings hockey, and University of Michigan football—often cheering on his teams with a resounding "Go Blue!"
Joseph was also a committed member of his church community, where he found solace and strength in his faith.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Mary Free Bed, Sheridan Community Hospital, Hospice of Michigan Big Rapids, and Harbor Hospice Poppen House for their compassionate care during Joseph's final journey.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Joseph's memory to Harbor Hospice, located in Muskegon, MI, as a tribute to the loving care he received.
