April 27, 1942 — December 22, 2025
With profound sadness and heartfelt remembrance, we honor the extraordinary life of Joseph Charles Cabral, who peacefully departed this world on December 22, 2025, surrounded by the boundless love of those closest to him. Born on April 27, 1942, in the picturesque town of San Miguel, Azores, Portugal, Joseph was a beacon of warmth, wisdom, and compassion throughout his 83 years.
The beloved son of Hermano and Maria Cabral, Joseph was predeceased by his parents, siblings Cecelia, Herman, Louis, and Natalie, his cherished son Craig, and his devoted wife Diane. His enduring spirit lives on in the hearts of those he leaves behind, including his beloved companion and partner, Valerie Dubois, who was not only his best friend and devoted caregiver but also his source of boundless joy and strength. Joseph is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and an extended circle of friends who treasured his company.
Joseph's early years in New Bedford, Massachusetts, were marked by a love for the outdoors and a passion for sports, particularly soccer and baseball, which he enjoyed playing in his youth. As a fervent supporter of New England sports, Joseph's enthusiasm was infectious. His intellectual pursuits led him to New Bedford High School and later to the University of Oklahoma, where he earned a PhD in Physics. His dedication to education and knowledge shaped his career as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA), where he was admired for his unwavering commitment to patient care, treating each individual with the utmost respect and compassion.
A proud Vietnam War veteran, Joseph served his country with honor and retired from the Army Reserve as a Lieutenant Colonel. His military service was a testament to his courage and dedication to others.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Joseph's life was enriched by his love for traveling and cycling, pursuits that mirrored his adventurous spirit and zest for life. His charm and warm smile were as enduring as his dedication to the people he loved, leaving an indelible mark on the lives he touched.
A memorial service to celebrate Joseph's life will be held on February 20, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Pius X Church, located at 98 Station Avenue, South Yarmouth, MA. For those unable to attend, the service will be livestreamed at https://www.facebook.com/stpiusxsy.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Joseph's memory to Meals on Wheels (ESCCI, 68 Route 134, South Dennis, MA 02660) or online at https://escci.org/donate/. This gesture will honor Joseph's lifelong commitment to caring for others and ensuring that no one goes without.
The family extends their deepest gratitude to Valerie Dubois for her unwavering support and love, especially during Joseph's final moments when he needed it most. We also express heartfelt thanks to Broad Reach Hospice and all who offered their unconditional help during Joseph's last weeks. Your kindness allowed his final days to be filled with peace and comfort.
