In Loving Memory

Joseph A Massey
April 23, 1949 — February 26, 2026
In the serene embrace of a February morning, Joseph "Joe" Alton Massey, known for his indomitable spirit and boundless love, peacefully departed this world on February 25, 2026, at the age of 76. Born on April 23, 1949, in Raleigh, Joe’s life was a testament to unwavering faith, boundless love, and tireless service to others.
Joe was the beloved son of David and Laura Massey, who instilled in him a deep sense of compassion and resilience. He was preceded in death by his cherished sons, Joseph Jr. (Jay) and Joshua, his devoted parents, David and Laura, his brother, Charles Massey, and his beloved sister, Peggy Moore. Despite these profound losses, Joe's life was a luminous tapestry of love and joy, woven together by those who survived him.
He leaves behind his adoring wife of 53 years, Betsy, the love of his life and his steadfast partner in all things. Together, they nurtured a family grounded in faith, love, and laughter. Joe was a devoted father to his daughters, Jennifer Barshay (Demian) and Jessica Young (David), who carry forward his legacy of kindness and compassion. His grandchildren, Zachary Dale (Drew Pearson), Xander MacKethan, Brody, Bailey, Brandon, and Vivian Young, and Maija and Evan Barshay, were the light of his life, each a testament to his enduring love and guidance.
Joe's professional journey saw him retire from IBM and Cenplex Building Services, where he was admired for his dedication and integrity. His colleagues remember him as a man whose work ethic was matched only by his kindness and generosity.
A man of profound faith, Joe was a pillar of his community, deeply involved in the Wesley United Methodist Church. His melodious voice enriched countless services, and his leadership in organizing community events—be it a pancake supper, a BBQ, or a spaghetti dinner—was always infused with his infectious joy and laughter. His commitment to serving Jesus was evident in his work with the Kairos Prison Ministries, where he touched countless lives through his compassion and unwavering faith.
Joe’s culinary skills were legendary; his ability to "doctor up" a dish was a delight to his family and friends. Holidays at the Massey household were filled with warmth, laughter, and delectable meals, creating memories that will be cherished by all who experienced them.
Survived by his siblings Johnny Massey (Carleen), Lacy Massey (Shirley), Tracy Massey (Rose), and Nancy Stuart (Allen), along with numerous nieces, nephews, and friends, Joe's vibrant spirit and generous heart will leave an indelible mark on all who knew him.
As we gather to celebrate Joe's life on March 6, 2026, at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home in Raleigh, NC, we do so with hearts full of gratitude for the love he shared and the lives he touched. Joe's spirit continues to inspire those who had the privilege to know him, and his legacy will be carried forward by the generations who follow.
In this time of mourning, we extend our heartfelt thanks to all who have offered their kindness, prayers, and support. Your presence and love are a comforting reminder of the community Joe cherished and served throughout his life. As we remember Joseph A. Massey, may his soul find peace in the eternal embrace of the Lord he so faithfully served.
