In Loving Memory

Joseph A Massey
April 23, 1949 — February 6, 2026
It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Joseph "Joe" Alton Massey, who departed this world on January 18, 2026, at the age of 76, surrounded by his loving family. Born on April 23, 1949, in Raleigh, Joe lived a life full of love, laughter, and dedicated service, leaving behind a legacy that will be cherished by all who knew him.
Joe was the cherished son of David and Laura Massey, who, along with his sons Joseph Jr. (Jay) and Joshua, his brother Charles Massey, and his dear sister Peggy Moore, welcomed him into eternal rest. Left to honor and carry forward his memory are his devoted wife of 53 years, Betsy, whose unwavering love was the cornerstone of Joe’s life. Together, they built a family grounded in faith and love that stands testament to their enduring partnership.
A loving father, Joe is survived by his daughters, Jennifer Barshay and her husband Demian, and Jessica Young and her husband David. His legacy of warmth and kindness lives on in his grandchildren: Zachary Dale (and partner Drew Pearson), Xander MacKethan, Brody Young, Bailey Young, Brandon Young, Vivian Young, Maija, and Evan Barshay. Each grandchild was a source of immense pride and joy, and Joe’s eyes would light up whenever he spoke of them.
Joe was a man of faith and community, deeply involved with Wesley United Methodist Church. His voice, a beacon of hope and celebration, resonated through the church, enriching services, weddings, and funerals with his heartfelt singing. He was a leader, orchestrating church events like BBQs, pancake suppers, and spaghetti dinners, his laughter and joy infectious to all who participated. Joe's faith extended beyond the church walls as he served with dedication in the Kairos Prison Ministries, impacting many lives alongside his brothers in Christ.
Professionally, Joe retired from IBM and Cenplex Building Services, where he was respected for his hard work and dedication. Yet, it was his personal life where he truly shone. Known for his legendary cooking skills, Joe delighted in "doctoring up" meals, bringing his family and friends together over delicious food and shared stories. His love for holidays was unparalleled, each celebration leaving a lasting impression on those fortunate enough to partake.
Joe is also survived by his siblings Johnny Massey (Carleen), Lacy Massey (Shirley), Tracy Massey (Rose), and Nancy Stuart (Allen), as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends who will miss his joyous spirit and generous heart.
A service to celebrate Joe’s life will be held on March 6, 2026, at 12:00 noon at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, located at 300 Saint Mary's St., Raleigh, NC. It is here that friends and family will gather to honor a man whose life was a testament to love and service.
Though Joe has left this earthly realm, his spirit remains vibrantly alive in the hearts of all who were privileged to know him. His love for Jesus, his family, and his community will continue to inspire generations to come. May his soul rest in eternal peace, embraced by the love of his Savior.
