October 11, 1955 — May 13, 2026

In loving memory of Joni Kay Drahos, who graced this world on October 11, 1955, in Ely, Nevada, and departed unexpectedly at her home on May 13, 2026, at the age of 70. Joni was a beacon of light for everyone who had the fortune to know her, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and boundless generosity. Born to Kitty Valene Laird and John E. Laird, Joni was raised in a family that cherished community and connection. She carried forward the values imparted by her parents and grandparents, all of whom she has now joined in eternal rest. Joni's life was a tapestry of rich experiences and cherished relationships. She is survived by her devoted partner, John Wood (affectionately known as Woody) of McGill, NV, her beloved daughter, Amy Crane of Carlin, NV, her sister, Stacy Laird, and Darrell Asay. Her niece, Marci Laird, numerous cousins, and many dear friends who she held close to her heart will continue to celebrate her vibrant spirit. Among her closest companions was her ultimate partner in crime, Jeanette Tilly, with whom she shared countless unparalleled adventures. Her "big brother" in spirit, John Messick, along with many more friends who were too numerous to name, all knew they held a special place in her heart. Joni's journey began with her graduation from White Pine High School in 1973. She pursued her initial passion for beauty at a beauty school in Carson City, NV, before realizing her true calling lay elsewhere. Her career was as diverse as it was fulfilling, including roles as a bookkeeper, office manager, and dispatcher, predominantly in California. However, it was her return to McGill in 1985 that marked a new chapter in her life. Working as a nurse's aide at the White Pine Care Center, she forged a bond with Jeanette Tilly that would last a lifetime. In August 1989, Joni found her true vocation with the Nevada Department of Corrections, where she dedicated herself to serving others for two decades. Her colleagues often affectionately referred to her as "Mom," a testament to the nurturing and supportive presence she provided. Her retirement in August 2009 marked the end of an era, but her impact on those she worked with continues to be felt. Joni was an active and cherished member of the McGill community, contributing her time and talents to the I.O.O.F and as a founding member of the McGill Revitalization Association, where she served as Treasurer. She also dedicated her efforts to the McGill-Ruth Water Board, ensuring her community thrived. Outside of work and community service, Joni embraced life with a passion for the outdoors, whether on her 4-wheeler, fishing, hunting, or simply enjoying a "toodle," as she fondly called it. Her love for animals was evident in her home, always filled with the joyful presence of various critters and grand furbabies. Music was the rhythm of her life, and she never missed an opportunity to dance—often attending concerts with her daughter, Amy, no matter the performer. Known affectionately as "Chatty Kathy," Joni's gift for gab and quick wit endeared her to everyone she met. Her vibrant personality was matched by her unwavering kindness and generosity. She was perpetually busy, always engaged in something meaningful, albeit with a reputation for never being on time. Friends and family knew to tell her to arrive 30 minutes early, just to ensure her timely presence. Joni's life will be celebrated on July 3, 2026, at 3:00 PM at the McGill Swimming Pool Park. Her family invites all who knew her to join in commemorating a life well-lived, filled with joy and profound love for those around her. As we bid farewell to Joni Kay Drahos, we hold her memory close, comforted by the thought that she is up there, dancing like no one is watching, forever in our hearts.
