February 17, 1960 — August 8, 2026

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Jonathan "Jonny" Balderston, a beloved husband, brother, uncle, and friend. Born on February 17, 1960, in Berkeley, California, Jon departed this world on August 8, 2026, at the age of sixty-six after a courageous battle with cancer. His life, though cut short, was filled with creativity, laughter, and a deep love for his family and community. Jon was the cherished son of Fred and Judy Balderston, who preceded him in death. He is survived by his devoted wife, Linda Shiozaki, whom he married on July 14, 2012, and his loyal Australian Shepherd, Addie. Jon also leaves behind his siblings, Dan, Sara, and Tom Balderston, along with his brother-in-law, John Brooke, and sister-in-law, Betsy. He was a beloved uncle to his five nephews, Matt Brooke, Benjy Brooke, Caleb, Dave, and Mark Balderston, and a great-uncle to Nate, Mimi, Liza, and Judy. His family, alongside countless friends, will forever hold his memory in their hearts. A proud Berkeley native, Jon graduated from Berkeley High in 1977 before pursuing a B.S. in Resource Management with a minor in Art from UC Davis in 1983. His passion for art flourished under the guidance of Robert Arneson and John Roloff, leading him to a career that artfully blended carpentry and design. Jon founded Derby Street Studios and created the Hodgepodge Lodge, a studio space that embodied his unique artistic vision. His work spanned painted art furniture, utilitarian and decorative wooden art, and abstract photography, earning him recognition as a cherished member of the Quirky Berkeley community. Jon's attic studio, affectionately dubbed the Balderdash Museum, was a testament to his love for collecting and curating vintage toys, game boards, and memorabilia. His creative spirit knew no bounds, extending to interior, architectural, garden, and graphic design. Jon's whimsical nature and penchant for storytelling were showcased in his humorous book, "It's Raining Cats and Dogs and Other Sayings," a project he completed with the help of his family. Beyond his artistic endeavors, Jon was a dedicated voice in the preservation of Berkeley's cultural heritage. He supported Habitat for Humanity for many years, volunteering enthusiastically to help build homes for those in need. Jon's love for the outdoors was evident in his frequent hikes through Tilden Park and his childhood adventures as a California State Park Junior Ranger. He cherished the memories of working on his father's cattle ranch and his time at the California Nature Conservancy. Jon's warmth, wit, and humor were the hallmarks of his personality. Known for his love of puns and playful spirit, he brought joy to all who knew him. His legendary birthday celebrations with the "February 17th Society" were filled with laughter and creative antics that will be fondly remembered by family and friends. Jonny's legacy is one of kindness, creativity, and an unwavering zest for life. His artistic contributions and infectious laughter have left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him. A memorial to celebrate Jon’s life is planned for early next year. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the World Wildlife Fund, a local animal shelter, or Habitat for Humanity in Jon’s memory.
