In Loving Memory

MAYI JOINA NEKOYE MAKAWA
March 10, 1940 — April 6, 2026
It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved matriarch, Joina Nekoye Makawa, who departed this world on April 6, 2026. Born on March 10, 1940, in the lush landscapes of Kenya, Joina's journey was marked by resilience, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to her family and community. She was 86 years old.
Joina was the cherished daughter of Mzee Joseph Wafula Bukhuni-omukitang'a and Mama Veronica Nasaka-Omutukwika. They instilled in her the values of hard work and integrity, which she carried throughout her life. Her education began at Matili Primary School, where she reached standard six, but her path took a different turn when she married the love of her life, Pascal Beda Makawa-omulako, in 1956. The couple began their life together in Kapkatenyi village, within the former Mt. Elgon district. Pascal, her devoted husband, predeceased her in May 1989, leaving Joina to nurture their legacy with strength and grace.
A skilled farmer, Joina dedicated herself to her land, cultivating crops and tending animals with an industrious spirit. Her work ethic was an inspiration, as she never ate the bread of idleness, her lamp never extinguished even in the quiet hours of the night. Her hands not only tilled the earth but also crafted meals that became the heart of family gatherings. Her culinary skills were unmatched, drawing her children and grandchildren to her table with the promise of special meals prepared with love.
Joina's family was her greatest joy and her life's crowning achievement. She was the proud mother of six children: the late Godfrey Makawa, Fenwick Makawa, Gilbert Makawa, the late Felix Makawa, Lemmy Makawa, Jannet Makawa, and Joseph Makawa. Her legacy continues through her numerous grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren, each a testament to her enduring love and guidance.
A woman of faith, Joina was an active member of Nehemiah Church in Kiminini for two years. Her compassion and community spirit extended beyond the church, as she also played an integral role in the Umoja and Matisi Upendo Self Help Groups. Her commitment to service and community upliftment was a beacon of hope and unity.
Joina was a woman of substance, known for her no-nonsense demeanor and her ability to engage in brilliant discussions and sober arguments grounded in facts. Her wisdom and candor were respected by all who knew her, making her a revered figure in her community.
As we bid farewell to Joina Nekoye Makawa, we remember her as a pillar of strength, an embodiment of love, and a nurturer of dreams. Her legacy will forever remain in the hearts of her family and the many lives she touched with her kindness and wisdom. Though she has departed from this world, her spirit will continue to guide and inspire us.
May her soul rest in eternal peace.
