Johnny Roosevelt Merritt Sr.

November 3, 1936 — August 19, 2026

Johnny R. Merritt Sr., 89, passed away peacefully on August 19, 2026. Born on November 3, 1936, Johnny lived a full, rich life centered on his deep devotion to family and community. He was preceded in death by his parents, Reverend John Merritt and Edith Merritt, and his beloved wife, Cynthia Merritt (née Barnes). A man of profound work ethic, Johnny dedicated over 50 years of service as a skilled Pipefitter and retired from the Norfolk Naval Base Department of Public Works. Throughout his distinguished career, he worked at Newport News Shipbuilding and the Naval Yard. He later extended his service to the Newport News Public Schools and the Yorktown Visitors Center. He strongly believed in the value of hard work, a principle he proudly instilled in his children. Outside of his profession, Johnny was happiest in the fresh air. He loved watching Westerns and was an avid fisherman who took great joy in family seafood gatherings…especially sharing crab cakes and blue crab. Johnny’s legacy continues through his five devoted children: Vickie Harrison, Hampton, VA; Johnny (Jackie) Merritt Jr., Newport News, VA; Marcus (Denise) Merritt, Caseyville, IL; Alexis Merritt, Hampton, VA; and Jeremy (Pamela) Merritt, Waldorf, MD. He also leaves behind a proud lineage of 11 grandchildren as well as a host of cherished great-grandchildren. He was loved and cherished by many family and friends and will be truly missed.
