Johnny Lewis Kennedy
June 20, 1947 — July 2, 2026
Johnny Lewis Kennedy, a man whose life was a testament to service, craftsmanship, and kindness, passed away peacefully on July 2, 2026, at the age of 79, at the Charles George VA Medical Center in Asheville, North Carolina. Born on June 20, 1947, near Wilmington, North Carolina, Johnny's journey through life was marked by dedication to his country, his craft, and the people he loved.
Johnny was the beloved son of Mildred Spence Kennedy, who predeceased him and whose memory he cherished deeply. He was also predeceased by his dear siblings: Marlene Lyles, Jerry Kennedy, Carolyn Burdough, and his twin sister, Joan Wood. Despite these losses, Johnny's heart remained warm, and he found joy and solace in the company of his surviving family, including his nephew Tommy Wood, numerous nieces and nephews, and his circle of close friends.
As an attendee of New Hanover High School in Wilmington, Johnny's early life was shaped by the vibrant community in which he grew up. His sense of duty led him to serve his country in the Navy for four years, where he was stationed aboard the U.S.S. Ticonderoga (CVA-14) Carrier Air Wing 19, also known as "The Grey Ghost," during 1966-67. His time in the Navy was a chapter he held with pride, reflecting his commitment to service and his unwavering patriotism.
After his military service, Johnny found his calling as a certified automotive mechanic. His aptitude for fixing things was legendary among those who knew him. There was rarely a machine or device that Johnny couldn't repair, and he offered his skills generously to anyone in need.
Beyond his professional life, Johnny was a man of many passions. An avid woodworker, he was a valued member of the Apple Country Woodcrafters, where he shared his love for creating beautiful, hand-crafted pieces. His love for nature and the earth led him to become an enthusiastic rockhound and lapidary artist, and he proudly participated in the Henderson County Gem and Mineral Society. Through these communities, Johnny formed lasting friendships and left a legacy of artistry and generosity.
Johnny's character was defined by his willingness to help others. His friends and family describe him as a man who could fix anything and was always ready to lend a hand without hesitation. His kindness and humility touched the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
The family and close friends wish to extend heartfelt gratitude to the friends and caregivers who supported Johnny throughout his life. Their love and care provided him with comfort and companionship, particularly in his later years.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Charles George VA Medical Center, a place that provided Johnny with compassionate care and support in the last few months of his life.
Johnny Lewis Kennedy's life was a testament to the power of kindness, the joy of creation, and the honor of service. He will be deeply missed, but his spirit will live on in the hearts of those who loved him and the beautiful things he left behind.
