Johnny Lewis, a beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on July 23, 2026, at the age of 91. Born on November 28, 1934, in Montgomery, Alabama, Johnny was the cherished son of Jake Lewis and Willa Jones. His life was a testament to love, laughter, and devotion to family and community. Johnny's early years were spent in Montgomery, AL, where he attended Booker T. Washington High School. After completing his education, he honorably served his country as a medic in the United States Army from 1946 to 1948. This experience instilled in him a deep sense of duty and compassion, qualities that he carried throughout his life. In Montgomery, he met and married the love of his life, Bernice Lewis, and together they embarked on a journey filled with love and family. Bernice preceded him in death, as did their beloved son, Ahmad Lewis, and daughter Fannie Holloway. Fannie Middleton, sister in-law deceased, sister deceased Gloria brother in-law (Henry), Ezra, Archie and Cheryl. Helen Cox cousin deceased all of whom welcomed him into eternal rest. Despite these profound losses, Johnny's spirit remained unbroken, and he continued to be the heart of his family. Johnny's entrepreneurial spirit led him to Los Angeles, California, where he opened a café, sharing his culinary talents with the community. His passion for cooking flourished as he took on the role of chef at the Hollywood Ranch Market, where he became known for his delicious dishes and warm smile. A man of deep faith, Johnny was a devoted member of the Olivet Baptist Church in Los Angeles, where he found strength and solace in his spiritual community. His faith was a guiding force throughout his life, providing him with comfort and purpose. Johnny's sense of humor was legendary, characterized by his unmistakable way of greeting those he loved. With his signature expression, "Suckaaaa!", he brought laughter to family and friends, making every gathering a joyous occasion. His love for smoking his pipe was a familiar sight, often seen as he shared stories and laughter with those around him. Johnny leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories. He is survived by his devoted daughter Avis Crews and her husband Ricky, and his loving son Louis James Lewis and his wife Cathy. He also leaves six grandchildren, Aisha, Jackie, Jameil, Lannae, Tajuan, and Alaysia, who will carry forward his spirit of warmth and kindness. Additionally, Johnny was blessed with three great-grandchildren, Cori, Carlito, and Carter, who brought him immense joy. Private funeral services will be announced by the family, honoring Johnny's wish for an intimate gathering of family and close friends. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you honor Johnny's memory by extending kindness to others, sharing a meal with someone in need, or supporting your local church or veterans' organization.
