It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of our beloved Johnnie Mae Johnson, who departed this world on May 24, 2026, at the age of 79. Johnnie Mae was born on September 13, 1946, in Helena, Arkansas, to the late Mrs. Dossier B. and Johnnie Frank Barnes. Johnnie Mae’s journey was marked by a deep devotion to her family and an unwavering spirit that resonated with everyone she encountered. She was a beacon of love and warmth, traits instilled in her by her cherished grandparents, Abram and Mary Otis. Her upbringing in Helena laid the groundwork for a life characterized by kindness and generosity. In 1968, Johnnie Mae married her soulmate, Tommy Wilson Johnson Sr. Their union, which spanned 59 wonderful years, was a testament to enduring love and partnership. Together, they built a family rooted in love, respect, and joy, welcoming four children into the world. While she faced the heart-wrenching loss of her son, Tommy Johnson Jr., and granddaughter, Brittany Johnson, Johnnie Mae’s resilience and faith were sources of strength for her family. Johnnie Mae was a proud graduate of Little Rock High School, where she formed friendships that would last a lifetime. Her career at Chicago Public Schools as a dedicated security guard spanned over two decades, where she safeguarded the futures of countless young minds. She retired in 2005, leaving behind a legacy of commitment and care. Beyond her professional life, Johnnie Mae cherished her role as a mother, grandmother, and friend. She found immense joy in spending time with her family and was blessed with 16 grandchildren, each of whom held a special place in her heart. Whether she was sharing a home-cooked meal, engaging in lively conversations, or conquering a crossword puzzle, she enriched the lives of those around her with her spirited presence. Johnnie Mae was predeceased by her parents, brothers Johnnie Frank Barnes Jr. and Leroy Barnes, son Tommy Johnson Jr., granddaughter Brittany Johnson, and her beloved grandparents. She leaves behind her devoted husband, Tommy Johnson Sr., daughters Sharon Johnson (Daniel Effinger) and Tella Johnson, son Everett Johnson, and a host of grandchildren, including Takiya Johnson, Ashlee Johnson, Tyesha (Leon Fletcher), Tommy Johnson III, Jacqunette Wilson, Aubrey Johnson, Jamel Johnson, Evelyn Johnson, Teà Johnson, Darion Effinger, Darius Effinger, Aaliyah Bradley, and Nyhgel Curb. Johnnie Mae's legacy is one of love, compassion, and an open-hearted embrace of all who crossed her path. She welcomed everyone into her life with open arms, creating a nurturing environment that will be fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her. As we bid farewell to Johnnie Mae, we celebrate a life filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories. Her spirit will continue to inspire us, and she will be profoundly missed by her family, friends, and all who were blessed to know her.
