In Loving Memory of Johnnie (John) J. Daum Johnnie (John) J. Daum, a devoted educator, passionate speaker, and cherished family man, was called to eternal rest on August 10, 2026, in the gentle embrace of Edgewood Vista memory care in Spearfish, South Dakota. Born on June 4, 1947, in Murdo, South Dakota, to the late John and Nancy Daum, John led a life rich in love, learning, and service. A proud alumnus of Murdo High School, John graduated in 1965 before pursuing higher education at Black Hills State University. It was there he met his beloved wife, Katherine Buchanan, marrying her on his birthday, June 4, 1969, in Spearfish, South Dakota. The couple shared a deep bond for over five decades until Kathy's passing. Together they nurtured a family that would grow to include their daughters, Denise (Ryland) Byrd and Lynette Byrd, and their adored grandchildren, Micah and Olivia Byrd, who softened John’s once strict demeanor into that of a doting grandfather. John's career as an educator began in 1969, teaching American history and government in the Newcastle Wyoming school district for 28 years. He was not only a teacher but a mentor, coach, and role model, serving as a middle school football and basketball coach and later as the athletic director. His love for education and sports was evident in every lesson and every game he refereed. Upon taking early retirement, John embraced a new role that would take him around the world as an International Director for Lions Club International. His dynamic presence and musical talents made him a sought-after motivational speaker, leaving audiences inspired from Thailand to New Zealand. Music was a thread that wove through John's life, from accompanying Kathy in song to supporting the BHSU music department and Friends of Music Committee. In his retirement, John found joy in various pursuits, from repairing windshields to driving buses, and even as a fiddler at Isburg Funeral Chapel. His hands were never idle as he gardened, golfed, and worked on woodworking projects, always with a readiness to adventure with his camper. John's life was one of service, not only to his students but also to his community. He was an active member in the United Methodist Church in Newcastle and later the United Church of Christ in Spearfish, reflecting his deep faith and commitment to helping others. His leadership extended to roles within the Lions Club, Masons, and local hospital boards, always seeking to uplift those around him. John's legacy is one of warmth, wisdom, and unwavering dedication. He leaves behind his daughters and grandchildren, his sister Hilda M. Locke, and countless friends and former students whose lives he touched. His family finds solace in the belief that John is reunited with Kathy in Heaven, continuing their shared passion for music. A celebration of John’s life will be held at the United Church of Christ in Spearfish, South Dakota, on August 28, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to a charity of your choice, honoring John’s spirit of giving and community service. Our family will forever miss Dad's infectious enthusiasm and his impromptu history lessons. He had the gift of gab, and his stories will live on in our hearts, guiding us on our journeys as he did so lovingly in life.
