John Voorhees VanDoren
July 2, 1938 — May 15, 2026
In loving memory, we celebrate the remarkable life of John Voorhees VanDoren, who peacefully passed away on May 15, 2026, at his home following a couple of brief hospital stays. Born on July 2, 1938, in Allegheny, California, John’s life was a tapestry of love, service, and joy woven through the lives of all who knew him.
John was the cherished son of Willard Voorhees and Alta Lena VanDoren. He was preceded in death by his father, and his siblings, Richard VanDoren and Inez Mae Elkins, who no doubt greeted him with open arms in the next life.
John leaves behind a legacy of love through his beloved wife of 49 years, Maudie Jeanne Abrott, whom he married in May 1977 in Belmont, California. Their union was a testament to unwavering love and partnership. Together, they nurtured a beautiful family, including their cherished children: daughter Pamela Saito, daughter Elaine, and son Lanson. His family further blossomed with the joy of seven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren, each bringing unparalleled joy and pride to his life.
A man of great dedication, John graduated from Grass Valley High School and went on to serve his country honorably in the US Army. His professional life was marked by a 30-year career as a skilled craftsman with AT&T in the Peninsula of the Bay Area. His commitment and work ethic were admired by all who had the privilege to work alongside him.
John was not only devoted to his work and family but also to his community. He was an active member of the Elks Organization in the Bay Area and Yolo County, where he forged bonds and contributed to the spirit of camaraderie and goodwill. His father’s bowling alley in Palo Alto was another avenue through which he connected with others, spending countless hours both working and enjoying the sport that kept him fit and active.
John’s heart was forever tethered to the natural beauty of Sierra County. He found immense joy in his beloved Jeep, taking friends on adventurous weekend trips to share the serenity and splendor of the place he so dearly loved. These moments were more than just excursions; they were expressions of his generous spirit and his desire to bring happiness to those around him.
As we bid farewell to John, let us remember the warmth of his smile, the depth of his kindness, and the breadth of his love. His life was one of profound impact, and his memory will continue to be a guiding light for his family and friends. In honoring John’s life, we find solace in knowing that his legacy of love and joy will endure in the hearts of all who were touched by his presence.
A service to celebrate John’s life will be held at a later date, where family and friends will gather to honor a life well-lived and a man well-loved. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Elks Organization, reflecting John’s lifelong commitment to community and fellowship.
