JOHN THOMAS GIDEL
March 26, 1928 — July 12, 2026
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John Thomas Gidel, who departed this life on July 12, 2026, at the age of 98. Born on March 26, 1928, at St. Joseph's Hospital on the south side of Pittsburgh, PA, John was a beloved figure whose life was a tapestry of love, dedication, and storytelling.
John was the cherished son of the late John J. Gidel and Alice M. Donahoe Gidel. He is now reunited in eternal peace with his beloved wife, Doreen A. Badali Gidel, his son John P. Gidel, and his granddaughter Nicole A. Gidel.
John's legacy is carried forward by his loving children: Mary (Nick), Kenny (Ronita), and Betty (Gerry). He was a proud grandfather to Sean (Tarah), Ray (Krista), Eric, Julia (Brian), and Eva (Craig), and a great-grandfather to five wonderful great-grandchildren. His family was his greatest joy and his most treasured accomplishment.
Educated at St. Vincent's College in Latrobe, PA, John went on to lead a fulfilling career. He was a dedicated member of the Teamsters, working for AT Transport, where he spent countless hours behind the wheel, driving with unwavering commitment. He also served as a police officer at the Children's Hospital, offering his strength and protection to the most vulnerable.
A man of profound faith, John was a lifelong member of St. Stephen's Church in Hazelwood. From his baptism and confirmation to the renewal of his wedding vows on his 40th anniversary, the church was central to his spiritual journey. John was an active member of the congregation, serving as an altar boy, participating in the Men's Club, and contributing to the church bazaar and Meals on Wheels programs.
John's love for life extended beyond his family and work. He was an avid member of the Moose, sharing camaraderie and community spirit. His passions included driving anything with wheels, a testament to his adventurous spirit. Summers were spent at his cherished home in Deep Creek, MD, where he delighted in entertaining guests as a tour guide, and he found solace in boating and fishing.
Above all, John was a master storyteller. With nearly a century of experiences, he regaled family and friends with tales from every chapter of his life, from his childhood adventures to his wartime anecdotes and his days as a delivery person on a bike.
John's absence will leave a profound void in the hearts of all who knew him. His life was a testament to love, loyalty, and the power of storytelling. He leaves behind a legacy of cherished memories that will be recounted for generations.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in John's memory to a charity of choice, reflecting his generous spirit and lifelong commitment to helping others.
As we say goodbye to John Thomas Gidel, let us celebrate the remarkable life he lived and the indelible mark he left on the world. Rest in peace, dear John, in the loving arms of those who have gone before you.
