January 1, 1910 — January 2, 2026

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of John Smith, a beloved husband, stepfather, brother, grandfather, and great-grandfather, who peacefully departed this life on January 2, 2026, at the age of 116. Born on January 1, 1910, in Anytown, Alabama, John led a life rich with experiences and cherished connections that will forever be treasured by those who knew him. John was the cherished son of the late John Smith and Mary (Doe) Smith. He is lovingly survived by his devoted wife, Susie Smith, who was by his side through life's many adventures. He leaves behind his dear brother, Mark, and a large, loving family that includes his step-sons Fred, Gary, Henry, Irving, and Sue, as well as his step-daughters June, Kerrie, and Linda. John's legacy is also carried forward by his four grandchildren and one great-grandchild, who brought immense joy to his life. A man of remarkable resilience and character, John proudly served his country in the US Army during World War One, attaining the rank of private. His service, marked by unwavering dedication, was a testament to his enduring spirit and commitment to his fellow soldiers. In 2010, John achieved a remarkable academic milestone by earning a PhD in basket weaving from Phoenix Online University. His pursuit of education was a testament to his belief in lifelong learning and personal growth. For 47 years, John was a dedicated employee at Krogers, where he mastered the art of grocery bagging, becoming a trusted and familiar face to countless customers. His meticulous work ethic and warm smile left a lasting impression on all who had the pleasure of knowing him. John was an active member of the Loyal Order of Water Buffalos, where he formed lasting friendships and contributed to the community in meaningful ways. His hobbies were as unique as he was – with a passion for collecting empty beer cans, a collection that grew to nearly 23, reflecting his lighthearted spirit and appreciation for life's simple joys. Though John faced life's challenges, including being predeceased by his parents, he did so with a tenacity and sense of humor that endeared him to everyone around him. His marriage to Susie in May 2025 was a union filled with laughter and mutual support, a testament to the love they shared. A celebration of John's life will be held on May 9, 2026, at 1:00 PM at the Anytown Funeral Home and Pinball Emporium, located at 123 Oak Street, Anytown, Alabama.
