July 12, 1937 — May 1, 2026

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John Samuel Race, who left us peacefully on May 1, 2026 at the age of 88. Born in Evansville, Indiana, on July 12, 1937, Sam was the beloved son of John and Henrietta Race. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Judy and is survived by his former wife Sandra Race Geiser, his son John Race (Deborah Steller), his daughter Katherine Race Staggs, and his cherished grandchildren: Corbin Staggs, Samantha Staggs, Zale Steller Race, and Artemis Steller Race. Sam graduated from Woodward High School in Cincinnati, Ohio, and went on to pursue higher education at Miami University, where he earned his bachelor's degree. He furthered his studies at Peabody College, earning a master's degree. His professional career was devoted to the Cincinnati Public School System, where he served as an administrator and assistant principal at numerous high schools. After retirement, Sam found a new home in Ormond Beach, Florida where he lived for the remaining 38 years of his life. While there he discovered a new passion for rehabilitating houses, keeping busy with projects that reflected his love for craftsmanship and home improvement. A man of deep faith, Sam was an active member of his church, where he found solace and community. He was also a man of varied interests; including fishing, riding his Harley, and the simple joy of a root beer float. Sam's family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to his devoted "buddy," Pam West, whose unwavering support and kindness helped him through his later years. Pam's compassion will never be forgotten.
