It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of John Rawls, Jr., a cherished father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, who peacefully departed this world on August 20, 2026. Born on November 4, 1935, in Windsor, North Carolina, John was a beacon of love and wisdom for his family and community.
John was the beloved son of John Sr. and Lillian Rawls, who preceded him in death. He was also preceded by his devoted wife, Cleon Perry, with whom he shared a remarkable 49-year marriage. Their union was a testament to love and partnership.
John's journey in education began with his graduation from Windsor High School, followed by his bachelor's degree from East Carolina University and a master's degree from Virginia State University. He dedicated his life to shaping young minds, starting his career as a teacher of drafting and shop classes at Deep Creek High School. His passion for education led him into an administrative role, where he played a pivotal part in designing and building new schools for the Chesapeake School System.
John's life was a tapestry of rich experiences and joyful pursuits. Alongside his wife Cleon, he cherished taking cruises with his brother Ed and his wife Kitty, exploring the world's wonders. An accomplished pilot, John also shared his love for aviation by teaching students the thrill of flying. In his younger days, he found solace in fishing, and upon retirement, he embraced the challenge and camaraderie of golf, participating in numerous tournaments across the United States with dear friends.
John leaves behind a legacy of love and warmth in his surviving family: his children, Donna Benton and Robin Pate, who carry forward his values; his grandchildren, Scott Benton, Paul Benton, George Benton, and Jillian Ouyang, who were his pride and joy; and his great-grandchildren, Regan Benton, George Benton, and John Ouyang, who brought him endless delight and laughter.
A celebration of John's life will be held on August 26, 2026, at 11:00 a.m., at Graham Funeral Home, located at 1112 Kempsville Rd, Chesapeake, VA 23320. Family and friends are invited to gather and honor the remarkable life of a man who touched so many with his kindness and integrity.

John Rawls, Jr. will be deeply missed but forever remembered for his unwavering love, dedication, and the indelible mark he left on all who knew him. May he rest in peace, reunited with his beloved Cleon and his parents, in everlasting tranquility.
