John Powers Kinney

August 17, 1948 — April 6, 2026

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of John Powers Kinney on April 6, 2026, at the age of 77. John was born on August 17, 1948, in Glendale, California, to Jack and Lucille Kinney, who instilled in him the values of kindness and perseverance that he carried throughout his life. John was a man whose warmth could light up a room, known far and wide for his infectious smile and the comforting embrace of his big hugs. His life was a testament to love and dedication, qualities that shone brightly in his 62-year marriage to his beloved wife, Geneva, who preceded him in death just a year prior. Together, they built a legacy of love and resilience, weathering life's storms side by side. A successful local business owner for over 25 years, John was a pillar of the community, creating not just a business, but a welcoming space where friendships blossomed and dreams took root. His commitment to excellence and customer service extended beyond his business; after retiring, he shared his wealth of knowledge and passion by teaching at the local community college, inspiring a new generation to pursue their dreams with the same tenacity and heart. John was deeply involved with the Downtown Merchants Association and the Ukiah Mainstreet Program, where his leadership and vision helped shape a vibrant community. Beyond his professional endeavors, John found solace and joy in tending to his garden, a testament to his nurturing spirit. Many fond memories were made during backyard barbeques, where his laughter mingled with the scent of blooming flowers and grilled delights. Family was at the heart of John's world. He was a devoted father to his daughter Janelle, and a cherished grandfather to Davis, Nikolai, Maddie, Colten, and Casey, who will forever carry the torch of his legacy. His love knew no bounds, extending to his four great-grandchildren, whose futures he held dear. John is also survived by his sister, Lynne, and countless nieces, nephews, and great-grandchildren, all of whom were touched by his loving spirit. Preceded in death by his wife Geneva, son Brent, and brother Frank, John's passing leaves a profound void in the hearts of those who were fortunate to know him. Yet, his legacy of kindness, love, and laughter will continue to inspire and uplift. As we say goodbye to a remarkable man, we remember John not only for his achievements but for the love he gave and the joy he spread. His life was a garden tended with care, each moment a bloom of kindness, resilience, and joy. He will be dearly missed but never forgotten. A celebration of John's life will be held at a later date, where family and friends will gather to honor his memory and the indelible mark he left on this world. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made in John's memory to a local charity that embodies the spirit of community and compassion that he so dearly cherished.
