John Osie Thompson

May 14, 1948 — October 2, 2026

John Osie Thompson, beloved brother, father, grandfather, and friend, peacefully passed away at his home on October 2, 2026, in the presence of his cherished family. Born on May 14, 1948, in Augusta, Georgia, John lived a life marked by service, love, and laughter. The son of the late John W. and Ann Thompson, John was raised with values that he carried throughout his life. After serving with dedication in the United States Navy from 1969 to 1973, he reached the rank of Petty Officer Third Class aboard the USS Newport News and was honored with the National Defense Service Medal during the Vietnam War. His commitment to duty and country was a testament to his character. In January 1970, John married the love of his life, Kathy. Their union spanned 56 years, during which they built a family rooted in love and togetherness. Though Kathy and their son, John O. Thompson, Jr., have predeceased him, their legacy lives on through their daughter, Miriah and son in law John, and their grandchildren: Logan (Mackenzie), Savanna (Caitlynn), Jacob (Skye), John Sylas, and Aubrey, all of whom brought immense joy to John's life. Following his military service, John pursued a career as a lithographer at the University of Central Florida, where he worked for over 26 years before retiring in 2000. His dedication to his craft was paralleled by his devotion to his community. A deacon and member of Faith Baptist Church for more than two decades, John found purpose in serving others and strengthening his faith. John's life was enriched by his passions. An avid fly-fisherman, he sought out waters near and far to cast his line, often tying his own flies for competitions. His love for carpentry and woodworking led him to create one-of-a-kind furniture pieces for his family, leaving behind tangible reminders of his talent and love. He also enjoyed the thrill of flying and building RC airplanes, a hobby that brought him great joy. Known for his quick jokes and infectious smile, John had a unique ability to lighten any mood. His kindness and generosity left an indelible mark on all who knew him, creating a legacy of warmth and compassion. The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to Faith Baptist Church and its members, as well as Good Shepherd Hospice and Charters Health Hospice services, for their support and care. A celebration of John's life will be held at Faith Baptist Church, located at 8550 FL-33, Lakeland, FL 33809. John Osie Thompson's life was a testament to love, service, and joy. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who had the honor of knowing him.
