John Michael Covert, a beloved father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on August 6, 2026, at Presbyterian Hospital surrounded by the warmth and love of his sons. Born on November 12, 1953, in Philadelphia, PA, John was the cherished son of Dorothy and John Covert. He leaves behind a legacy characterized by resilience, dedication, and a profound love for family and craftsmanship.
Michael spent his early years in West Philadelphia on Larchwood Ave, attending Leeds Elementary School and Sayre Jr. High, where he began to develop his love for music, mechanics and engineering. His high school years were spent at St. Emma Military Academy in Virginia, where he graduated as a lieutenant in 1971, a testament to his leadership and commitment. Continuing his education, John attended the University of North Carolina Central for general studies and later transferred to Pierce Jr. College in Philadelphia, PA where he met his 1st and only love Patricia.
In August of 1973, Michael married Patricia Covert, his lifelong partner and confidante. Together, they built a family filled with love and shared experiences. Although Patty predeceased him, the strength of their relationship laid the foundation for their family to thrive in love and unity. Proud parents to Jason and Julius they dedicated their lives to raising their two sons with strong values and kind hearts.
Michael found his professional calling at Pantry Pride, where he worked for over a decade and became a master mechanic. His colleagues and friends admired him for his unwavering dedication and exceptional talent in mechanics. He was happiest when working in his garage, his hands deep in the workings of an engine, turning what others saw as broken into something beautiful and functional.
Family was at the heart of Michael’s world. He is survived by his two devoted sons, Jason and Julius, and his loving daughter-in-law, Dana. His grandchildren, Dante, Janaya, Taraya, and Jasmine, and great-grandson Ethan, along with another great-grandchild on the way, whom he leaves with hopes for his peace . John is also lovingly remembered by his siblings, Jaqueline, Anita, and Cornel, and a host of nieces and nephews, Chris, Santana, Chivas, Jenine and Lamar, who all carry forward his legacy of love and laughter.
John Michael Covert will be profoundly missed, but his memory will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. His life was a testament to the power of resilience. Michael will always be remembered for his quick wit, his bright smile, and the gentle way he cared for stray animals. Despite the heavy personal battles he fought later in life, he shared many joyful moments with his children, cheering at their childhood games. He leaves behind a family who loved him and hopes he has finally found peace.
