John Louis Pryor

February 19, 1952 — March 22, 2026

It is with profound sadness yet immense gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of John Louis Pryor. Born on February 19, 1952, in Queens, New York, John departed this world on March 22, 2026, after a tireless quest to regain his mobility. John was the cherished son of Louis E. and Clara M. Pryor, who predeceased him, as did his beloved brother, Tommy. He is survived by his devoted partner, Nancy, his two sons, Jason and Jonathan, and his seven loving sisters: Barbara, Diane, Joanne, Carol, Marianne, Katherine, and Margorie. John’s legacy continues through his four precious grandchildren, extended family, and a multitude of friends who were touched by his warmth and kindness. In 1974, John married Catherine Mannone, and though their marriage ended in 1983, it was a chapter filled with love and shared dreams. His academic journey began at St. Anthony's High School, from which he graduated in 1970, followed by Stony Brook University in 1973. His passion for education drove him to achieve his doctorate from St. John's University in 2012. A man of diverse talents, John was initially drafted to serve in the Vietnam War but received a college deferment. His career began in education, but he briefly stepped away to pursue work as an air traffic controller. Following the federal breakup of the PATCO union, he returned to his original calling, eventually serving as the principal of the Bridgehampton school district, where his impact on students and staff was immeasurable. John was a true lover of golf—a student, a teacher, and an ambassador of the game. His passion for golf was paralleled only by his dedication to teaching. A natural educator, John endeavored to illuminate, always seeking to explain the intricacies of the world around him. Despite often living alone, he was affectionately referred to as a "mayor" of sorts, known far and wide for his gregarious nature and the countless stories shared with all who crossed his path. A memorial service to celebrate John's life will be held on May 29, 2026, at 1:30 PM, with the location to be announced, though it is fitting to imagine it might take place at a golf club, a place so dear to his heart. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the John L. Pryor Memorial Fund at St. Anthony's High School, ensuring that his legacy of education and passion continues to inspire future generations. The family extends their deepest gratitude to Nancy and Taylor for their unwavering love and support during John’s final days. Their kindness and care brought comfort to John and will forever be remembered. John Louis Pryor will be remembered as a man of great integrity, endless curiosity, and boundless love. His legacy will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him. May he rest in peace, and may his memory be a blessing.
