John Louis McGrath

October 5, 1947 — May 31, 2026

It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of John Louis McGrath on May 31, 2026, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born on October 5, 1947, in Arichat, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, John was a beacon of strength and compassion, whose legacy will continue to inspire those who knew him. John was the beloved son of the late John and Gloria (Baker) McGrath. He was predeceased by his cherished parents but leaves behind a family who adored him, including his devoted wife of 40 years, Jane McGrath (née Cox), whom he married on July 11, 1987. Together, John and Jane built a loving home filled with warmth and laughter, nurturing their children, April, Tina, Patrick, and Joseph, with endless love and wisdom. A proud veteran, John dedicated 36 years of exemplary service to the Royal Canadian Air Force, achieving the distinguished rank of Chief Warrant Officer. His commitment to his country took him to various postings, including CFB Bagotville, CFB Cold Lake, CFB Shearwater, HMCS Fraser, HMCS Margaree, HMCS Preserver, CFB Baden Germany, CFB Greenwood, Air Command Headquarters Winnipeg, and finally 14 Wing Greenwood. His career culminated as the Squadron Chief Warrant Officer at 14 AMS Greenwood, where he was respected and admired by peers and subordinates alike for his leadership and integrity. Beyond his professional accomplishments, John was a man of many passions. He was deeply involved in his community, particularly in youth sports, where he managed minor hockey teams with dedication and joy. A lover of sports himself, John played Old Timers Hockey and was an enthusiastic participant in the Run Nova Scotia series. His discipline and perseverance also led him to excel in judo. John's creative spirit shone through his art. An avid painter, his works are treasured in private collections worldwide, each piece a testament to his talent and the beauty he saw in the world around him. John's legacy is lovingly carried forward by his children and their families, including his ten cherished grandchildren—Lisa, Rosa, Dwight, Jeremy, Sebastian, Nicholas, Hudson, Lillian, Landon, and Autumn—and one great-grandchild, Ryleigh. His family was his greatest joy, and he delighted in every moment spent with them, passing on his wisdom, humor, and love for life. In celebrating John's life, we remember a man who gave selflessly, lived fully, and loved deeply. His kindness and generosity extended beyond his family to his community, where he supported causes dear to his heart, including the Salvation Army. A service to honor John's life will be held at a later date, where family and friends will gather to share memories and bid farewell to a remarkable man whose spirit will forever remain in our hearts. In lieu of flowers, donations in John’s memory can be made to the Salvation Army, reflecting his lifelong commitment to helping those in need. John Louis McGrath will be forever missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege to know him. His life was a testament to dedication, love, and the enduring power of family, and his memory will continue to inspire us all.
