It is with sorrow and love that we announce the peaceful passing of John Lewis Highsmith on April 12, 2026, at the age of 95, following health issues over the last year. He was the finest example of a loving, encouraging, accepting follower of Christ and will be forever missed until we see him again. Born September 29, 1930, Raleigh, North Carolina, to parents Eve Diffenderfer and John H. Highsmith Jr. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 72 years, Barbara Atwell Highsmith. Their marriage, which began on January 6, 1952, was a testament to enduring love and partnership. John was also predeceased by his cherished daughter, Linda Highsmith, his parents, and his sister, Marion Smith. He is survived by his son, Gary Highsmith and his wife Laura and his step-grandson, Matthew Sanzalone. His other son Darryl, who lived with him. John's legacy continues through his granddaughter, Selina Gawriluk, her husband Kris, and his great-grandson Kannon. John graduated from Clay County High School in 1948. Then the University of Florida, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Education, focusing on Math and Science, in 1955. He furthered his education at the University of Southern Mississippi with a degree in Educational Administration in 1957, and completed his Master's in Math/Science Education at the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) in 1962. John proudly served his country in the United States Air Force as an A1C Cartographer from January 1950 to September 1953. He was very proud of his military service and his dedication was a hallmark of his character. With a passion for education, John spent over 40 years teaching, beginning his career at St. Johns River Community College from August 1962 to May 1993, and then at Duval County Public Schools until his retirement in May 2002. He was a mentor and inspiration to countless students throughout his career. John loved music and served as a choir director at various churches in Northeast Florida throughout his life. He was also proud that he generously donated nearly 90 gallons of blood, embodying his selfless nature and dedication to community service. John's life was a rich tapestry of love, service, and learning. His gentle spirit and unwavering love for his family and community will be deeply missed but never forgotten. A celebration of John's life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made in John's memory to a charity of your choice, reflecting his lifelong commitment to giving.
