It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the passing of John Walter Gelien, a loving husband, devoted father, cherished grandfather, and dear friend. John left this world on June 26, 2026, at the age of 65, after a courageous battle with illness. Born on October 15, 1960, in Orange, California.
John lived a life marked by love, resilience, and an unwavering spirit.
John was the beloved son of Patricia and Walter Gelien, who preceded him in death. He was also predeceased by his uncle Art Gelien, sisters Mary Clair and Theresa Gelien, and his niece Vicky Lynn. He is survived by wife of 36 years, Gail, and children Mark Gelien, Jamie Gelien Castle (Colton), John Ray Gelien Obeirne, Joshua Bull Gelien, and grandsons, Alexzander Gelien Thomas & Nathan Ray Obeirne.
John's life was enriched by the connections he maintained with his siblings: brother Michael Gelien (Janel), sisters Lynda Gelien, Monica Gelien, Lisa Gelien, and Susie Gelien (Jim). He was a beloved uncle to 6 nieces and 7 nephews.
He cherished the company of his childhood friends from California and his numerous friends in Oregon.
An alumnus of Leland High School in San Jose, California, John was a self-taught craftsman. He excelled as a flooring installer and in general construction. His dedication to his work was matched by his passion for the great outdoors. John found solace in fishing, camping, and traveling, often accompanied by his loved ones, as he explored the wonders of nature. He was also fond of the occasional visit to casinos, where he enjoyed the thrill of chance.
John leaves behind a legacy of kindness, laughter, and love for life. His welcoming heart and adventurous spirit touched everyone he met, and his memory will forever be cherished by all who loved him.
John's wife and children extend their heartfelt gratitude to his sisters, brother, & brother-in-law for their unwavering support and love during John's illness. Your kindness will never be forgotten.
John will be dearly missed, but his spirit will live on in the hearts of those who loved him. May he rest in eternal peace, surrounded by the beauty of the great outdoors he so greatly cherished.
