John Joseph Hannan, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully in his sleep on August 30, 2026, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Born on June 18, 1962, in Brooklyn, NY, John lived a life marked by dedication, love, and service.
John was the cherished son of the late John and Johanna Hannan and is predeceased by his stepdaughter, Chay Estes. He is survived by his loving wife and life partner of 21 years, Cherie Shipan. John's legacy continues through his children, John Hannan and Erin Hannan, and his stepchildren, Sara Shipman, Tori Shimpan, and AJ Shipman. He was a doting grandfather to Emerson and Parker Hannan and a proud step-grandfather to Delaynie, Everlee, and James.
John's career was a testament to his commitment to protecting and serving others. For 20 years, he worked as a detective for the NYPD, where he distinguished himself as one of New York’s finest. He was a first responder on 9/11, demonstrating extraordinary bravery and compassion during one of the nation's darkest hours.
Beyond his professional achievements, John found joy in life's simple pleasures. He loved to fish and spent countless hours collecting baseball memorabilia. A devoted fan of the New York Mets, he never missed a game. His passion for music was undeniable, with a special place in his heart for classic rock and a particular fondness for Billy Joel. John's culinary skills were legendary among family and friends, and he relished the opportunity to cook and share meals with his loved ones.
John was known for his big heart and his unwavering desire to care for others. His warm spirit and generous nature touched everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. He cherished every moment with his family, creating a home filled with love, laughter, and unforgettable memories.
John is also survived by his loving sisters, Maureen Maher and Margaret Schmid, who, along with his extended family and friends, will miss him dearly.
