John H. Pettitt

April 23, 1983 — May 4, 2026

It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the passing of John H. Pettitt, who departed this life peacefully at home on May 4, 2026, at the age of 43. Born on April 23, 1983, in Corning, NY, John was a beloved son, father, brother, uncle, and friend who brought joy, laughter, and love to all who knew him. John was the cherished son of Dale and Janice Pettitt, who nurtured in him a love for life and a spirit of kindness that he carried with him every day. A devoted father, John leaves behind his treasured sons, Gabriel and Xavier Pettitt, with whom he shared his passions and zest for life. His legacy of love and laughter will continue through them, as well as through his grandchildren, who brought him immense joy. A man of many talents and interests, John graduated from Campbell-Savona High School in 2002 and went on to earn a machinist degree from Corning Community College in 2004. His dedication to his craft was evident in his 19-plus years at Hilliards and his recent position at Eason Machine Shop in Elmira, NY, where his colleagues remember him for his skill and camaraderie. John was a man of the great outdoors—a passionate hunter and fisherman who found peace and happiness in nature. He delighted in sharing his love for cooking, often experimenting with new recipes that became instant family favorites. His enthusiasm for music was infectious, and he possessed the uncanny ability to name a song just by its tune. Classic movies were another passion, and he took great pleasure in introducing his boys to his favorite films and songs. Beyond his hobbies, John was a beacon of warmth and humor. Known for his quick wit and warm smile, he had an innate ability to lighten any mood and make everyone feel at ease. His gatherings, whether around a campfire or at family events, were filled with laughter and stories, often accompanied by the companionship of his beloved dog, Odin. John was predeceased by his beloved wife, Marie Anne Pettitt (Chilson), paternal grandparents, John and Irma Pettitt, maternal grandparents, Joseph and Barbara Dolley, and his uncle, Joseph Dolley. In addition to his parents and sons, he is survived by his sister, Heather Wray, and her husband, Mark Wray, niece, Haven Pettitt, nephews, Jason Kain (and his wife, Siarra, along with their son, Nathaniel) and Carter Wray, all of whom will dearly miss his presence and love. John's kindness, generosity, and the ability to make everyone feel valued were the hallmarks of a life well-lived. As we reflect on his life, we are reminded of the countless lives he touched and the indelible mark he left on our hearts. His memory will forever be cherished by his family and friends, whose lives were enriched by his presence. A celebration of John's life will be held to honor the remarkable man he was and the legacy he leaves behind. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in John's name to a charity close to his heart, reflecting his lifelong commitment to helping others. John H. Pettitt will be remembered not just for the life he lived, but for the love he gave so freely. Rest in peace, dear John, knowing your spirit will forever guide and inspire us.
