November 13, 1938 — October 12, 2026

John Gray Sr, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on October 12, 2026, at the age of 87. Born on November 13, 1938, in Norfolk, John was the cherished son of Dorothea Gray and Deacon John Gray. His life was a testament to love, laughter, and dedication to family and community. John grew up in Norfolk, where he graduated from Booker T. Washington High School. He went on to build a fulfilling career, retiring from the ABC store after many years of dedicated service. His work was marked by a strong work ethic and a genuine kindness that endeared him to colleagues and customers alike. A proud member of the First Calvary Baptist Church, John found joy and solace in his faith community. He was a man of simple pleasures, content to spend his days watching football and baseball, or sitting in front of his home, listening to the radio. These moments were often shared with family, as John's greatest joy in life was being surrounded by those he loved. John's marriage to Ernestine Merritt Gray was a beautiful example of love and partnership. Together they raised two wonderful children, Valerie Gray and John Alton Gray Jr, who survive him. He leaves behind not only his children but also four cherished grandchildren, who brought endless joy to his life. Known for his joking and happy spirit, John had a unique ability to make others smile. His laughter and warmth were infectious, and he had an uncanny knack for lifting the spirits of those around him. John's love for his family was boundless, and he was a constant source of support and encouragement. A service to celebrate John's life will be held on October 27, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at the First Calvary Baptist Church, located at 813 Henry Street. Family and friends are invited to gather and honor the memory of a man who touched so many lives with his kindness and joy. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to a charity of your choice, in memory of John. His legacy of love and laughter will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.

In lieu of flowers, the family of John Gray Sr welcomes donations to a charity, nonprofit, church, or organization of your choosing.
