John Faucheraud Grimké

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John Faucheraud Grimké, a cherished husband, father, and respected member of the Charleston community, who departed this life on August 9, 1819, in Long Branch, New Jersey, at the age of 66, after battling an undiagnosed illness. Born on December 16, 1752, in the historic city of Charleston, South Carolina, John lived a life marked by dedication, service, and love.
In 1784, John married the love of his life, Mary Moore Smith, and together they built a home filled with warmth and laughter. Their marriage was blessed with a large and loving family, including their beloved children: Nina, Sarah, Thomas, Ben, Henry, John, Mary, Fredrick, Anna, Eliza, Henry, and Charles. John’s legacy lives on in each of them, and his unwavering commitment to his family was a guiding light in their lives.
John Faucheraud Grimké served his community and his state with distinction as an Associate Justice and later as a senior associate justice of the South Carolina Court of Common Pleas and General Sessions. His fair judgment, integrity, and dedication to justice left an indelible mark on the legal landscape of South Carolina. He was not only a man of the law but also a man of deep faith, which he nurtured as an active member of St. Philip's Church in Charleston. He cherished his time spent within this spiritual community, attending with his family whenever his duties permitted.
Throughout his life, John remained a steadfast pillar of strength and wisdom to all who knew him. His kindness, compassion, and generous spirit touched the lives of many, leaving an enduring legacy of love and service. He was a man of principle who believed in the power of justice and the importance of family.

John will be deeply missed by his devoted wife, Mary, and their children, who carry forward his legacy with pride.
A memorial service celebrating John’s life will be held at St. Philip's Church in Charleston, where family and friends will gather to honor a remarkable man who gave so much to those around him. The family kindly requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to a charity of choice in John’s memory, a fitting tribute to his generous spirit.
