It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John Dubnicka, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother. He passed away on July 14, 2026, after bravely facing the challenges of ALS with quiet dignity. John was born on June 8, 1947, in Kalamazoo, Michigan, to parents Joseph and Virginia who predeceased him, along with his&Vicki’s infant son and his brothers Joseph and Steven.
John is survived by his two younger brothers, Paul(Dana) and Robert(Deb) as well as his devoted wife, Vicki, with whom he shared 53 beautiful years of marriage, filled with love, laughter, and unwavering companionship. Together, they built a family that John cherished above all else. He leaves behind his daughter, Kimberly Beth VanOrder, and her husband, Timothy, as well as his son, Michael John Dubnicka and his wife, Jennifer. John also delighted in the joy of being a grandfather to two wonderful grandchildren, Savannah Muriel and Mason Timothy who will surely carry forward his legacy.
A proud graduate of Gull Lake High School, John went on to graduate from Western in 1969. Following his graduation, he served his country with honor, being drafted into the Army. After fulfilling his service, he returned to Western to pursue his passion for education, graduating in 1973. John found his calling as a teacher, dedicating his career to inspiring young minds in the Decatur Public Schools.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, John was a man of many passions. An avid runner, he participated in numerous races and took particular pride in having completed five marathons, including the prestigious Boston Marathon. His love for reading, gardening, and exploring the beauty of nature was a testament to his lifelong commitment to learning and personal growth.
John's family was his most treasured part of his life, and he was happiest in the comfort of his home, surrounded by the ones he loved. His warmth, kindness, and gentle spirit touched the lives of all who knew him.
The family extends their deepest gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and staff at the Bronson ALS Clinic. Their exceptional care and support enabled John to live a longer and more meaningful life, allowing him to spend precious time with his family while remaining at home.

The family has chosen cremation. A private celebration of life will take place at a future date.
