John Doe

John Doe, a cherished and devoted member of the community, passed away peacefully at home on April 10, 2006, after a courageous battle with illness. Born on January 1, 1935, in Los Angeles, John lived a life full of love, service, and commitment to his family and friends. The beloved son of Dixie and Nettie Benjamin, John was predeceased by his parents, his sisters Verla Cooper and Clara Benjamin, his uncles Theodore and Otis Benjamin, and his aunt Mattie Haynes. He is lovingly remembered by his niece Carla Cooper of Antioch, CA, great-nephews Nicholas and Justin Karanikolas of Oakland, CA, and many cousins and dear friends from Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church. John's journey began in Los Angeles, but it was in East Oakland where he graduated from Fremont High School and later served his country with honor in the U.S. Navy. During his four years of active duty on the USS Bernard Richard, John exemplified dedication and bravery, earning an honorable discharge. Following his military service, he pursued further education at Laney College in Oakland, where he obtained his certification as an air conditioning and refrigeration technician. In 1963, John embarked on an entrepreneurial path, creating a successful refrigeration business and concrete paving company, which he ran with passion and precision for over three decades. His work was not only a testament to his skill but also a source of pride and fulfillment. Beyond his professional achievements, John was a pillar of strength and warmth within his church community. For more than thirty years, he was an active member of Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church, where his voice enriched the Brotherhood Men's Chorus and his spirit brought joy to all who knew him. His love for cooking—especially grilling, hosting fish fries, and making his famous potato salad—was a reflection of his generous heart, as he often brought people together through food and fellowship. John found joy in the simple pleasures of life, whether it was fishing trips to Clear Lake, tending to his garden, or playing dominoes with family and friends. He was a man of many talents and endless love, whose life was rich with deep connections and cherished memories. A service to honor John's life will be held on May 19, 2006, at 11:00 AM at Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church, located at 659 16th St, Oakland, CA. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to a charity of your choice. The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Kaiser East Bay Center for their compassionate care, with special thanks to nurse Hiners, who will always hold a special place in our hearts. John's legacy of kindness, love, and unwavering faith will be remembered and cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
