John David Leal

John David Leal, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on August 2, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. Born on November 11, 1954, in the small, tight-knit community of Roy, New Mexico, John was the cherished son of Carlos Leal and Isabel S. Arguello. John's adventurous spirit and dedication to service led him to the U.S. Navy, where he proudly served from March 23, 1972, to June 14, 1973. Stationed at the Naval Station in San Diego, CA, John also served during the Vietnam War, creating bonds and memories that shaped his life and sense of patriotism. In 1989, John married the love of his life, Margarita De Ungria Salazar, in Rockwall, Texas. Their union was blessed with four wonderful children: Jonathan and his wife Kim Leal, Jessica and her husband Jesus Griego, John C. Leal, and James Leal. John was a devoted family man whose greatest joy was spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. His legacy lives on in his grandchildren, Brooklynn and her husband Franklin Archuleta, Kobe and his wife Reesey Leal, Jonathan "Max" Leal, Sierra and her husband Kyle Logan, Danielle and Natalie Griego, Nevaeh, Bentley, and Noah Leal. He also leaves behind great-grandchildren James, Jordyn, and Rylee Archuleta, Tinley and Jonathan Leal, and Tatum and Noah Logan. John was a man of many talents and interests. His career took him from the Navy to working as a farm hand and a skilled butcher. Outside of work, John found peace and joy in nature. He was an avid gardener, fisherman, and hunter, often spending his days collecting rocks and sharing his love of the outdoors with friends and family. His passion for sports was evident in his unwavering support for the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Cowboys. John also had a fondness for westerns and TV, often sharing a good story or laugh over a classic film. Known for his warmth and kindness, John made friends wherever he went. He was recognized for his angling skills with the prestigious Angler Recognition Award and the Big Fish Award, accomplishments that spoke to his dedication and love for fishing. John is survived by his beloved wife, Margarita, who stood by his side for 37 years, his devoted children, and his cherished sister, Viola Abeyta. His family, friends, and community will remember him as a man of integrity and compassion, whose love and laughter brightened the lives of all who knew him. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to a charity of your choice in John's memory, honoring his generous spirit and commitment to helping others.
