March 16, 1930 — June 8, 2026

On the peaceful summer evening of June 8, 2026, John D. Salzman took his final journey, leaving behind a legacy of wisdom, kindness, and unwavering love. Born in the small town of Dixon, Illinois, on March 16, 1930, John lived a life filled with learning, adventure, and boundless generosity. The cherished son of Adam and Bertha Salzman, John grew up alongside his brother, Mark, and sisters, Ion, Gladys, and Daisy, all of whom have since passed on. John's remarkable life was a testament to the strength of family ties, as he remained a beloved uncle to countless nieces and nephews and took great joy in watching their families grow. In his later years, he found companionship and warmth in the tender heart of Ann Gillmeister, his long-time friend and confidante. John’s thirst for knowledge was insatiable. He pursued his education with vigor, earning a Bachelor's degree from Northern Illinois State Teachers College, a Master's from Northern Illinois State College, and ultimately, a Ph.D. from the University of Colorado. His time in the US Army, stationed at Dugway Proving Ground in Utah, instilled in him a profound respect for service and duty, values he carried throughout his life. A dedicated educator, John shared his passion for learning as a Chemistry professor at Red Rocks Community College in Lakewood, Colorado, for nearly three decades. Even after retiring, his love for teaching endured, leading him to impart the beauty of the German language to eager students. John's zest for life was evident in his love for the mountains. As an active member and trip leader for the Colorado Mountain Club, he cherished the breathtaking vistas of Colorado, often hiking and cross-country skiing across its stunning landscapes. His summers were marked by journeys to Europe, where he could be found scaling the peaks of the Alps. Well into his 95th year, John was a familiar and inspiring sight, trekking through his Eiber neighborhood with his trusty poles. A man of many talents, John was not only a lover of nature but also of music. As the Director of the Johannes Brahms Choir, he led with passion and precision, bringing people together through the universal language of song. His involvement with the T.E.V. Edelweiss Club further showcased his dedication to community and culture. John was a man of quiet strength and gentle humor. Though he could be shy, his quick wit and warm smile left an indelible impression on those fortunate enough to know him. He tended to his backyard garden with care, cultivating both common and novel vegetables, a testament to his nurturing spirit. The memory of John D. Salzman will be celebrated on June 8, 2026, at 6:00 PM at Olinger Crown Hill. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association in his honor, ensuring that his legacy continues to touch lives far beyond his passing. John's life was a melody of grace, compassion, and quiet strength. Though he has departed from this world, his memory will forever remain in the hearts of those he loved and those who loved him.
