John D. Plumley

January 31, 1937 — February 7, 2026

It is with deep sadness yet profound gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the peaceful passing of John D. Plumley on February 7, 2026. Born on January 31, 1937, in Marion, Ohio, John left this world as he lived his life—quietly and with dignity—after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. John was the beloved son of Carroll Claude and Viola June, and he was nurtured in a family that valued hard work and integrity. He was predeceased by his loving wife, L. Colleen, with whom he shared an extraordinary 69 years of marriage, a testament to a love that was as enduring as it was deep. Their marriage, celebrated on October 28, 1955, was one marked by partnership, laughter, and unwavering devotion. A proud veteran, John answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States Marine Corps, where he distinguished himself as the youngest sergeant in the Corps at the age of 18. His military service laid the groundwork for a life of discipline and leadership that he carried into his later years. Upon completing his service, John returned to Marion, Ohio, where he joined his father’s company, Plumley Contractors. His skill and dedication saw him rise to the position of Vice President of Field Operations, alongside his brothers Bud, Duane, and Ed. John found profound satisfaction in mentoring young people in the company, offering guidance and support to help them advance their careers and lives. John's life was characterized by his larger-than-life personality and a booming voice that, despite its volume, rarely carried a cross word. His was a life defined by compassion and strength, a 'man's man' without a trace of toxic masculinity. A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, John was always ready with wise counsel or a comforting word. He leaves behind a legacy of love and strength in his children, J. Daniel (Isabela) and Jeffrey (Renee), and in his cherished grandchildren, Justin (Rumela), Connor, and Caitlin (Josh). His siblings, Jerry and Judy, also survive him, continuing to share the stories and memories of a beloved brother. John was a committed member of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Marietta, GA, for the past 22 years. His faith was a cornerstone of his life, and he served diligently on the Church Council and the Church call committee, contributing to his community with the same passion he brought to every endeavor. A service celebrating John's life will be held on February 28, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, located at 2292 Sandy Plains Rd, Marietta, GA 30066. It will be a time to honor his memory, to share stories, and to remember the remarkable impact he had on all who knew him. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in John's memory to Alzheimer’s research or to a charity of your choice. John D. Plumley will be remembered as a man of integrity, kindness, and unwavering dedication to his family and community. His legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of those who had the privilege to know him.
