~In Loving Memory of John D. Harwell~ It is with deep sadness, yet profound gratitude for a life well lived, that we announce the passing of John "Big Dave" Harwell, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. Dave departed this life peacefully at home on July 14, 2026, surrounded by his adoring family. He was 88 years old. Born on August 17, 1937, in Akron, Ohio, Dave was the cherished son of John Henry and Gladys Irene Harwell. From an early age, he exhibited a remarkable appreciation for the beauty around him, a quality he carried throughout his life. Dave was the kind of man who never met a stranger. His kindness and generosity were a testament to his character, leaving an indelible mark on everyone he encountered. In 1957, Dave married the love of his life, Margaret Ann Carlile, whom he affectionately called Peg, in a ceremony in Randolph, Ohio. Together, they embarked on a journey filled with love, laughter, and adventure for 69 wonderful years. Their partnership was a model of devotion and strength as they raised four children—John Lee (Lori) Harwell, Tami McElderry, Penny (Medley) Reynolds, and Ben (Jeanna) Harwell. Dave's legacy also lives on through his nine grandchildren, their significant others, 11 great-grandchildren, his sister-in-law, Jean Harwell, and many nieces and nephews across the country. Dave served his country with honor in the Naval Air Reserve, a testament to his strong sense of duty and patriotism. After his service, he dedicated most of his career to working as a painting contractor, where he was renowned for his uncanny ability to match paints and stains by sight alone. This skill was just one of many that highlighted his keen eye and attention to detail, qualities that served him well in both his professional and personal endeavors. Upon retiring in 1999, Dave embraced his passion for the outdoors as an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved ducks and enjoyed bird-watching, often spending peaceful hours in his orchid house. Dave's garage was a treasure trove of woodworking projects, where he crafted cutting boards and restored furniture with care and precision. Among his many hobbies, his most fulfilling was undoubtedly being a legendary grandfather and great-grandfather, roles he cherished above all else. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at HCA Florida Northwest Hospital for their compassionate care and to VITAS Hospice for their professionalism and comfort during Dave's final days, ensuring a peaceful passing. John D. Harwell will be deeply missed but never forgotten. His life was a beacon of light and love, and his spirit will continue to guide those who had the privilege of knowing him. As we say goodbye, we hold onto the precious memories and the love he shared, which will forever remain in our hearts.
