John C O'Neill III

May 31, 1955 — June 3, 2026

It is with heavy hearts and profound respect that we announce the passing of John C. O'Neill III, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, who departed this world on June 3, 2026, at the age of 71. Born on May 31, 1955, in Willimantic, Connecticut, John lived a life rich in love, service, and adventure, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew him. John was the devoted son of the late John C. O'Neill Jr. and Jean A. O'Neill, who instilled in him the values of dedication and integrity that he carried throughout his life. He joins them in eternal rest, along with his cherished granddaughter, Elizabeth Grace Praeger. On a beautiful day in October 1974, in Aurora, Colorado, John married the love of his life, Sheila A. Jutras, beginning a remarkable journey of 53 years together. Their union was blessed with a loving family: his son Sean O'Neill, daughters Kate, Maureen, Kevin, and Meghan, and son Matthew O. O'Neill. John found immense joy in his role as a grandfather to 14 adoring grandchildren, each of whom he cherished deeply. John's life was marked by a distinguished military career that began when he enlisted in the U.S. Army in late 1973. He served with honor and valor for 24 years, achieving the rank of Major O4. His assignments took him across the globe, from Germany to Korea, the Sinai, and Grenada. Among his numerous commendations were the Master Parachutist Badge, Combat Diver Badge, Air Assault Badge, Flight Surgeon Wings, and the prestigious Special Forces Tab—testaments to his bravery and dedication. After retiring from the Army in 1997, John transitioned to a career in healthcare, where he served as a Physician Assistant specializing in Urgent Care and Emergency Medicine at Group Health and later Kaiser Permanente until 2018. His compassionate care and professional expertise touched countless lives. Beyond his professional achievements, John was a man of diverse passions. An avid outdoorsman, he was a "rabid" fisherman and hunter, a traditional archer, fly tier, fly fisher, and Spey caster. He was a life member of the Gold Prospectors of America, Puget Sound Anglers, and The Special Forces Association. His gardens flourished under his tender care, and he found joy in the company of his Black Labs, especially Brady and Doc. A lover of languages, John was a polyglot, fluent in French, German, and basic Gaeilge. John was a member of Sacred Heart Parish in Lacey, Washington, where he found community and spiritual solace. Known for his sharp wit and resilience, John possessed a tender heart and an unwavering loyalty to those he loved. He was a man of many talents and interests, a myconaut, herbalist, and distiller of spirits, who approached life with curiosity and enthusiasm. As we bid farewell to John C. O'Neill III, we remember his life as a tapestry woven with love, courage, and an unyielding spirit. His legacy lives on in the hearts of his family and friends, who will forever cherish the memories of his warmth, kindness, and indomitable spirit. A celebration of John's life will be held at Sacred Heart Parish, where family and friends will gather to honor a life well-lived. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in John's memory to a veteran's organization of your choice. Rest in peace, dear John. You are loved beyond measure and will be missed more than words can express.
